Carney says Canada will match Trump’s 25% auto tariffs

In response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs on vehicles, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will be imposing counter-tariffs of their own. Carney stated that Canada will match Trump’s 25 per cent tariffs on vehicles imported from the United States that are not compliant with the CUSMA free trade agreement. Additionally, tariffs will be imposed on the non-Canadian content of CUSM-compliant vehicles from the United States. However, car parts or vehicle content from Mexico complying with CUSMA will not be affected by the tariffs.

Carney emphasized the importance of Canada responding with purpose and force, asserting that Canada is a free, sovereign, and ambitious country. He also expressed Canada’s readiness to lead a coalition of countries that believe in free trade, especially if the United States is no longer willing to do so.

With the new round of U.S. tariffs on Canada’s auto sector taking effect, the global trade war initiated by Trump continues to escalate, causing concern among markets and industries worldwide. Carney’s announcement reflects Canada’s determination to protect its interests and assert its independence in the face of international trade challenges.
