Dangerous Alpine crossings – The shepherds unafraid to take risks | DW Documentary
Shepherds have been crossing the Alps with their animals for 6,000 years. That means climbing 3,000 meters in altitude, all while crossing rivers and a glacier. Called “transhumance,” the seasonal movement of livestock is now world cultural heritage.
Along with 1,400 sheep, shepherd Markus and his colleagues travel from South Tyrol to Austria every spring, journeying back again in the fall. Just like his ancestors, Markus looks after the animals on the mountain pastures throughout the summer. It’s an arduous task, but also a dream job.
Markus is also responsible for ensuring that the crossing of the Alps runs smoothly again this year. This is no easy feat, as the route over rockfall and ice is dangerous for animals and humans alike. Accidents happen again and again: “One slip and you’re gone,” he says. “But still, it’s something very special. For me, it’s an honor to be part of it.”
Markus spends the summer alone on the mountain pasture, looking after healthy and sick sheep for months on end. A little further down, in the Schnalstal Valley, his brother Johann looks after the family farm and the animals that spend the summer there.
The two brothers are bucking a trend, as sheep farming is hardly financially viable anymore. There is little money to be made from the wool and meat of the animals. Shepherds and farmers increasingly need an additional source of income, or are changing their focus completely.
Nonetheless, South Tyrolean sheep farmers are still hoping that this season will be better than the last, meaning one without injured sheep, and without accidents. It is important to them that the next generation will also have the opportunity to continue the tradition that has been going on for thousands of years.

Full of bears harrasing the flocks every night
Good if the weather is always warm but problem is wind rain snow too hot also with cows could be they run away or dont want to go back home wolf attack and criminals who can murder you and steal the animals and sellling them for money but they are problems in my country maybe not everywhere according to this video looks like a cool work to do
Is the weather THAT different? I just love the sound of the bells clanging! I don’t see the sheep dogs actually doing a lot of working! Thank you DW for this amazing glance into the past and the present!
The shepards of alps are way wealthier than those in the Andes or Himalayas (very poor).
Done done
11:22 Global Warming? Ofc it’s a scam

I just told my wife we are saving up to move. I want to be standing amongst my flock of sheep smoking a pipe living my best life
the best job in the world ..
My heart is overjoyed after watching. I'm currently working in a financial company, but I decided to return to my homeland – mid 2026. Will start our livestock farming again, our family heritage since 1700s. Just preparing my funds to shockproof my move from a monthly income to a profit. A sense of fulfilment to think that my grandparents lived and died as livestock farmers, and here I am, never thought that I will follow their footstep. Our family heritage will continue Godwilling.
Its amazing they can navigate in white out conditions like that. Its sad you can't make a living off sheep in Alps . There is so much to offer, wool, fabric, milk cheese and meat. You can still make a living in the US off sheep, cattle farming . Not a rich lifestyle, you do it for the love of farming animals. Subsidies from the government are needed for food farming in the US. My family been in agriculture farming for 200yrs , my cousin calls it a poor man's hobby
I wish this was longer !
“The closer we are to the shepherd, the safer we are from wolves.” — Sheep
Going vegan would take much of the risk out of this, using recycled plastic for clothing would replace the need for wool also, AI and robots will do all of the work for people of the world. This is the best of worlds. Aliens probably see humans as sheep as we ruin our planet, somethings guiding us, but can can't agree on what it is.
My grandma was a shepard in the Mountains of Galicia, the North of Spain, above Portugal. Is a nice hobby.
🐐💯
Good job guys and also very hard job, thank you God bless,
Imma need Markus and Johan’s Instagram stat 😂❤
OMG THERE’S TWO OF THEM STOPPPP 😍😍😍😍
These are Hobbyist cosplaying, not impressive
Wonderful to keep the traditions ! And it makes me so sad that wool lost it value because people wear cheap clothing …. Protect the farmers …The gouvernments have to take our food sources more seriously .
Awesome…
This is insane expedition 😮😮
