Depeche Mode Announce ‘Depeche Mode: M’ Movie Chronicling 2023 Mexico City Shows

Depeche Mode are gearing up to release a full-length feature film chronicling the band’s massive 2023 shows in Mexico City on their Memento Mori tour. Depeche Mode: M, directed by award-winning Mexican filmmaker Fernando Frias (I’m No Longer Here, Don’t Expect Anyone to Believe Me), is due out later this year.

According to a release, the “expressive and dynamic cinematic” film will take viewers “on a profound musical journey, using nearly 200,000 Mexican fans’ fervent connection with the band as a window into the band’s timeless global influence, and a powerful tribute to the unbreakable connection between music, tradition and the human spirit.”

The movie promises to mix footage from the three sold-out shows at Mexico City’s Foro Sol Stadium in September 2023 to explore the parallels between the themes on the long-running goth rock band’s 15th album, Memento Mori (Latin for “remember that you must die”) with the “deep connection to death and mortality in Mexican culture.”

The globe-trotting Memento Mori tour landed at No. 9 on Billboard’s list of the top 10 highest-grossing rock tours of 2024 with grosses of nearly $125 million across 63 shows that sold 910,000 tickets. Though the triumphant outing was a career high for the band, singer Dave Gahan said in December that he and co-founder guitarist/keyboardist Martin Gore were not focused on recording new music at the moment.

“Martin and I have talked. We actually saw each other recently, and it was really nice,” Gahan said. “We spent some time in Italy where Anton Cobijn and his wife were renewing their wedding vows in a really nice spot just outside of Rome. We had a really nice time without any work or show pressure. I actually did ask Martin if he’d been writing and he was like, ‘Nah!’ That’s normal – especially when you’ve worked intensely for a couple of years. It takes a while. Wait and see. I wouldn’t rule out as getting together at some point, but it’s not on the cards at this point.”
