Diplomatic breakthrough as Ukraine agrees 30-day ceasefire in talks with US

In a historic diplomatic breakthrough, Ukraine has agreed to a 30-day ceasefire with Russia proposed by the United States. The announcement came after a day of talks between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky in Saudi Arabia.

Speaking to reporters, Rubio stated that he will present the ceasefire offer to Russia, emphasizing that “the ball is in their court.” Zelensky expressed optimism about the proposal, stating that it is now up to the US to convince Russia to agree to the “positive” initiative.

The talks, held in Jeddah, marked the first official meeting between the two countries since the controversial Oval Office clash between Zelensky and former US President Donald Trump. Following the meeting, the US also announced the immediate resumption of intelligence sharing and security assistance to Ukraine, which had previously been suspended.

Both countries issued a joint statement committing to naming their negotiating teams and beginning negotiations towards a lasting peace that ensures Ukraine’s long-term security. Rubio stressed the importance of Russia’s acceptance of the ceasefire, stating that Ukraine is “ready to stop shooting and start talking.”

The proposed ceasefire has raised hopes for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. As negotiations continue, the international community will be closely watching for Russia’s response to the US-Ukraine peace initiative.
