Dr. Peter Attia on Enhancing Your Final Decade of Life
In the latest episode of “60 Minutes,” renowned physician Dr. Peter Attia delves into a transformative approach to health and longevity, specifically focusing on what he labels the “marginal decade”—the last ten years of life. Obviously, there are some good take-aways from this but the reality is that there is no silver lining. At 73, with some recent health scares, I am committed to improving my diet, continuing to swim, bike, lift weights and exercise my brain by playing guitar, learning Vietnamese and Spanish and knowing when to relax and breath as necessary. I hope to be around another 15 years or more! It's mostly up to me!
How do I know which decade is my last one? Maybe if I enjoy life to its fullest I can make this decade the last one!
Too bad I didn’t do all of that, Jack 91.
I agree exercise, eating healthy, taking care of ourselves, is key to living a long and healthy life but we all need to stop for a minute and think about our eternal lives. Because our eternal lives are so much longer than this little blip on the line of our lives
Medical schools also spend zero time on alcohol and drug addiction! It’s criminal.
I could get the same results from Reader’s Digest …. “I am Joe’s Scam”
….diet, exercise is it.
Just follow the CrossFit methodology and listen to Greg Glassman. He has been preaching this for years.
You need to study my mother who is 80.
We need people as much as exercise. I tried to leave the gym today without finishing my normal workout when one of my friends shamed me into finishing the workout.
I've read Dr. Attia's book, he's legit. The only hard part is following his advice.
“The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away. Who knows the power of Your anger? For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath. So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
Psalms 90:10-12 NKJV
He’s selling a temporal solution for an eternal problem. The gospel is free .
Humanity evolved to be athletic as a survival necessity. Now we choose to be out of shape as a cultural norm because we (most people in the U.S.) no longer have to struggle to find food.
The aggressive pursuit of comfort and leisure is what's prematurely aging and killing people (i.e. sarcopenia).
You may not be able to control/extend your lifespan, but you damn sure can control your healthspan.
Maintain a comfortable level of athleticism throughout your life so you can grow old and still be strong and agile, not weak and fragile.
Workout seriously, with a defined routine for full body fitness, => 3x a week, for heart/body strength.
Agile. Not fragile. For as long as possible.
It's well known that spending time in the outdoors is extremely important for mental and physical health.
Exercise is great, I agree, but 10 hours aerobic and weights on top of that equals about 20 hours a week? That would take up much of your life. And Austin, IMO the mold and mildew capitol of the world gave me asthma as a souvenier. Loved the music but I couldnt live there.
That Dr who said that about him is part of the problem this country has in the medical field. Our physicians don’t even lay hands for examinations anymore during a routine office visit. It’s pathetic. And they have the nerve to charge for it.
A family health care hospital mugged me ,well my health insurance, for almost a half a million.I definatly feel worse now and have lost all my energy from reccommended procedures.
You know this guy is 100% right I'm 56 and people will tell you physically they believe I'm around 43 to 44 externally physique wise they will tell you that they think 30 to 40 years old max most women will tell you early 30s I have my own regiment I don't think I have to be an MD to figure it out I have my own vitamins I work out 5 days a week and each of those days it's cardio and then waits supersets and then on day 6 I usually run three to four miles I rest on day 7 I have more regimen of food and everything else My blood I draw it every 4 months here's the biggest key to everybody out there every 90 days at least or 120 days you should be donating blood It is like an oil change for your body and any doctor who tells you no then that person absolutely has no idea or didn't listen to the the teachers and medical school but I have a regiment people can definitely ask ask away on here I believe it's a bit more regimented than even Dr Tia which his regiment is fantastic. And he's also right that you should be training like a top athlete there's no reason not to no one says you have to lift 120 lb dumbbells at 55 years old but you should be lifting.
I believe that there is much truth, but one extreme is just as bad as the other.. Everyone is different, and I personally work with many 65 yr olds and older.. and my clients are doing amazing on somatic mindful and body weight plus training. We incorporate mind, body, and breath..
What a handsome guy
It does not take a doctor to tell me to exercise regularly and eat smart. I find this a bit of self promoting his “new brand” (3.0) of medicine. Taking a body scan will surely reveal some likely small follow up requirement and I do not know how much falls on negative follow up to get “nudged”.
Well, Dr. Attia probably won’t gain much of what really matters in his lifetime because instead of making the program accessible to the masses promoting healing to those who believe in his method, he decides to make it inaccessible to about 98% of the population by making it super expensive. He markets his knowledge/program and makes himself available only to multimillionaires and billionaires. The Universe takes care to right selfish deeds. I assume the Universe gave him the knowledge to share and make the world better but instead he decides to only enrich himself. Not saying he doesn’t have the right to capitalize, but not by selfish means.
Dr Attia’s book “Outlive” was a game changer for me. I completely changed my diet and exercise, and aside from a short lived cancer detour, my health has improved dramatically. I’ve tracked my VO2 max, zone 2 exercise and many other factors, high protein, low carbs, hydration, sleep, etc. his podcast has a lot of great information. It’s not realistic for a lot of us who don’t live in Austin and don’t want to raid out retirement account to get on his client list, but between the book, podcast and a major mindset change, a lot of what he’s doing is available to us. The hardest part has been trying to get through to stuck doctors who practice “this metric = this medicine at this dose”, which can be effective, but also antiquated in many cases.
So eat healthy food and exercise? I would have never guessed.
Does he accept Medicaid and Medicare?
What about your genetics and the longevity of my parents and grandparents. I think genes (or the 501’s as I call them) have a part to play in your programme
Just another celebrity doctor telling everyone they need to be jacked. This will be another framework thrown away when everyone realizes it's not sustainable or all that healthy. A test that tells the reporter that even she isn't healthy enough is pretty telling. I'll stick to my eating healthy, walking in nature, and being content.
They fall of the wagon at 50 SIR
10:47 I think his workouts is a little extreme for the general audience and overdone probably stemming from this. he's self projecting. this is a workout he needs to do for himself because of his trauma, but not for people little more put together than him. regular folks doing this workout you'll injure yourself.
Since when are The final yrs " plagued with immobilization and sickness"!!! FOR F..K SAKE YOU R TALKING ABOUT USA!!
USA IS NOT THE WORLD!! WE R NOT THAT SICK, UNWELL, FAT As YOU ALL…THK GOD
I get it what Dr. Attia says but I'm a 73 year old male and have been told I look a lot younger for my age. I'm beginning to feel a little discomfort with my body. I'm a short man under 5'7" weigh 183 avg. I used to weigh more. My only thought is that my parents and grandparents lived long lives. Averaging in the mid 80s to 90s. I don't recall them excercising on a regular basis. I believe that DNA plays an important role on longevity. Dr. Attias ideas are great for those who struggle. I believe not everyones body ticks the same. Some age very quickly and others don't. I eat sporadically that comes to mind without thinking of my health. I just hope it lasts for a longer period. Best wishes to all who are trying hard to stay healthy. 🙏❤️
If only I knew when my last decade is…
Eat Cottage cheese…. grass fed, with 5 to 10 grams of fat. One of our Family staples since I was a kid. Great benefits 👍
I, too, found that the greatest motivation to live as long as I possibly could was the birth of my child. At 24, while completing her master's work, she was murdered. I'm a former competitive athlete with a master's in psychology, and sans a sense of purpose, physical health means nothing. My daughter was my "razon de ser"; what now? Physical well-being means nothing in the absence of mental well-being. Emotional well-being must always come first!
