The brutal death of Ugandan Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei has sent shockwaves through the sports world and highlighted the alarming rate of femicides in Kenya. Cheptegei was doused with petrol and set on fire by her boyfriend in a horrific act of violence that tragically ended her life.
This tragic incident is just the latest in a series of violent attacks against female athletes in the region, underscoring a disturbing trend of rising femicides. Njeri Migwi, founder of Usikimye, an organization in Kenya that fights gender-based violence, spoke to France 24 about the prevalence of such heinous acts and the urgent need for action to protect women and girls.
The death of Cheptegei serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by women, both within and outside of the sports industry. It also highlights the deep-rooted issues of gender-based violence and the urgent need for comprehensive efforts to address and prevent such atrocities.
As the world mourns the loss of a talented athlete, it is crucial that we come together to condemn violence against women and work towards creating a safer and more equitable society for all. The legacy of Rebecca Cheptegei must not be forgotten, and her tragic death must serve as a catalyst for change in the fight against femicide in Kenya and beyond.

I'm not sure what the neologism "femicide" adds to the conversation. "Gender -based violence" is even worse because it's so vague and seems to assume a uniform motive – but you are only looking at statistics, which cannot explain motives.
I really recommend you reconsider your editorial approach to this topic.
