Summary of Harriet Craig (1950)
Harriet Craig is a gripping psychological domestic drama that showcases Joan Crawford in one of her most chilling performances. Directed by Vincent Sherman and adapted from Mary C. McCall Jr.’s play, the film delves into the life of Harriet Craig, a perfection-obsessed housewife whose need for control extends beyond her immaculately kept home to the very people within it.
Plot Overview
Set against the backdrop of 1950s suburbia, Harriet’s world is one of rigid order and facade. She meticulously arranges her household to reflect an idealized version of domestic bliss, but her obsession with maintaining appearances leads to manipulation and deceit. As her tyrannical grip tightens, both her husband, played by Wendell Corey, and her carefully crafted life begin to unravel. Wendell Corey delivers a subtly poignant performance as the supportive yet increasingly trapped husband, embodying the quiet suffering of a man caught in a beautifully furnished prison of his wife’s making.
Character Dynamics
The film cleverly unravels the intricate power dynamics between Harriet and her husband, revealing the fragility of their marriage. Harriet’s psychological turmoil is brilliantly encapsulated in Crawford’s intense portrayal, making her an unforgettable cinematic figure.
Conclusion
Harriet Craig stands as a slow-burn character study that not only highlights the perils of control and perfectionism but also serves as a commentary on the societal expectations of women during the era. It leaves viewers reflecting on the complexities of personal identity and the masks we wear in our lives. With a compelling narrative and superb performances, particularly from Crawford, the film remains a fascinating exploration of the darker sides of domesticity.

A very good movie!!!
Good story but have seen Joan in similar roles and while she does them well it was good for the rest of the cast to carry their own roles in support of hers. I have seen Wendell in other roles too and it was great to see him come out of his self sacrificing role into the man he truly was.
Joan was really a magnetic movie star. They don't make 'em like that anymore.
What impeccable acting abilities❤❤❤
That was slick of Joan, when her husband mentioned he had intended to play golf with a friend. The old soft face to face rub, and the go ahead dear be with your friend, as I go upstairs and take a long bath…that changed his mind‼️
I know this was just a movie, but within 10 minutes of the beginning of this movie, you're left wondering how in the hell did Walter Craig ever possibly think of marrying someone like Harriet. She looks old for him to begin with, she wasn't that hot looking, and her personality….well…..she's an absolutely hideous person.
🥲💚🥲
She was indeed a great actress a brilliant star. I have watched several movies and the best for me is Mildred Pierce. It is a shame you people do not upload it, one only finds trailers and few minutes of the movie here in Youtube.
Joan Crawford in this excellent performance seems herself. I think she was a woman who did not care what ever takes to be in a priviledged pisition, best actress, powerful, ambitious, rich, etc. But in the end she had nothing not even her adopted children. What she cared of was her name the Great and Only one Joan Crawford.
Wild last 15 minutes turns it into a noir
I loved this film. No one plays a narcissist like Joan Crawford. What B. LOL
One of Meghan Markle's ancestors…

Eternal Icon miss Joan Crawford, her movies are part of my life. Thank you for uploading it ✨
Wonderful movie but coming from gas lighting and manipulation, omg! It was triggering! I had to step away and meditate lol – then finish the movie! Very well made!
Just watched this for the first time. She is exactly like my sister-in-law, lying to everyone, turning people against each other, and eventually winding up alone for her evilness. My poor brother!
Love that old Hollywood fake British accent.
This movie is excellent but I hate stores about lying screaming woman. I won't see it again because she was disgusting. But she got hers in the end.😅
Thank you so much 😊 YouTube for showing us all these wonderful movies 🎥 I want to watch Gidget movie I’m looking for it I love ❤️ Sandra Dee movies 🎥 I hope I can find it
A vile actress playing a vile woman, Joanie was good at that.
Ads every four minutes?
Good movie
A very thought provoking movie.
Thanks for sharing.
Harriet is overbearing jealous and a good example of controlling
Craig really missed out on a golden opportunity after the vase was smashed. I would've chosen to hang around a few more weeks and break more of her stuff, just to see the look on her face.
