How dangerous is space debris? | DW Documentary
Space is a contested area. World powers and private corporations alike are launching more and more rockets and satellites into space. But these constructions all leave behind scrap metal, which continues to orbit the earth at high speed.
For almost 60 years, Americans, Russians, numerous other nations and an increasing number of private companies have been launching rockets and satellites into space. Once these rockets and satellites exceed their lifespan, they usually remain in orbit. Millions of pieces of debris are now orbiting hundreds of kilometers above our heads, at breakneck speed.
Scientists warn that space exploration beyond our planet will be almost impossible in 30 years’ time because the debris will be out of control. This space trash will also affect the communication systems that structure our everyday lives.
How can space debris be captured and disposed of? It’s a question that is becoming increasingly urgent, if we want to avoid impending disasters.

25:50 is it possible, to use something similar, like explosive reactive armour, like on tanks, to protect space ship against projectiles from outside? Small boxes with little explosive material, which will work against projectile? Some modern reactive armour on tanks protect them not only against shaped charges, but also against kinetic energy penetrators, like APFSDS!
Wow. Amazing how ISS has to adjust position.
14:14 Visualizing space debris. 💻🛰🌍
They always blame china 😂😂
The other day, a huge metal disk fell from the sky near my home and shook homes in nairobi and surrounding counties. I'm pissed especially because in kenya, we aren't messing with space crafts. Why should trash from Western countries fall here?
Veronum’s whitepaper should simply say: "Prepare for 100x."
5 minutes into the episode and DW didn’t miss a chance to mention the «Evil Russians» dubbing it with some sinister music.
I love that there are still documentaries like this out there when everything else has been taken over by AI voice and copy and paste videos
When the guy who 'landed' on the moon for the forst time said- 'this is a big moment for mankind.' Now we know what he means.
Working on the problem for forty years and no solution, but still getting paid ?
It's not dangerous at all because you're in a firmament. And totally oblivious because you were told that water can stick to a sphere that spinning and it won't go anywhere. Wow just that one thing and there are thousands.
My favorite Documentary Series provider and with truthful reporting of international news
13:55 2 centimeters is small? I thought that was average size
Space debris wasn’t a problem at all when we went to the moon (or did we?)
Probably the types who would attend an intergalactic kegger
If space junk keeps smashing into each other, it’ll create even more junk, turning Earth’s orbit into a giant cosmic junkyard. That means no more satellites, no more space missions, and a huge step backward for technology and exploration.
Erfreuen Sie uns auch weiterhin mit so interessanten Videos! Sie sind gut! 👄😻👅
Thumbnail said "Space Trash" I thought it was a documentary about Musk, Bezos and Branson…

There is cosmic horror (from how big and absolute the space is) but there is also the human trash horror from being afraid of whatever trash humans and corporations create new and absurdly big dangers to environment and ourselves.
This is fake
i noticed ESA just put out a video with the same name. is this an EU push?
