This talk by Dr. Ihsan Ayyub Qazi explores how data, when harnessed ethically and intelligently, can fight misinformation, protect children online, and even improve healthcare outcomes. Through three compelling, research-backed stories — viral fake news leading to mob lynchings, unsafe YouTube ad exposure for children, and using AI to improve medical diagnostics Dr. Qazi shows how data can create scalable social impact in the Global South and beyond. Dr. Ihsan Ayyub Qazi is a tenured Associate Professor of Computer Science at LUMS, where he previously served as Department Chair at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering. His research spans cloud computing, data center networks, wireless systems, and the societal impacts of AI and large language models. With a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and postdoctoral training at UC Berkeley, Dr. Qazi brings global expertise to digital development challenges, including misinformation, privacy, and equitable internet access. His work has been published in leading international venues and cited by global tech companies and policymakers. A strong advocate for inclusive digital infrastructure in South Asia, he regularly consults on technology policy and the future of ethical computing.
