Summary of Human Desire (1954)
Human Desire is a gripping film noir directed by Fritz Lang, bringing together a powerhouse cast that includes Glenn Ford as Jeff Warren, Gloria Grahame as Ellen Simmons, and Broderick Crawford as Carl Buckley. Adapted from Émile Zola’s novel La Bête Humaine, the film weaves a complex tale of desire, betrayal, and revenge set against the backdrop of post-war America.
The story follows Jeff Warren, a Korean War veteran and railroad engineer who returns from the battlefield seeking a quiet life. However, his aspirations for peace are quickly derailed when he becomes entangled in a passionate affair with Ellen Simmons, the discontented wife of the volatile yardmaster Carl Buckley. As their illicit relationship unfolds within the shadows of the rail yards, themes of jealousy and blackmail emerge, intensifying the already perilous dynamics.
The film masterfully depicts the tumultuous emotions of its characters, exploring the darker aspects of human nature. Ford portrays Jeff as a tortured soul struggling with his past, while Grahame exudes a magnetic allure as the conflicted Ellen. Crawford’s portrayal of the menacing Buckley adds an oppressive tension that escalates the drama as their entwined fates hurtle towards a catastrophic climax.
With its noir aesthetics and suspenseful storytelling, Human Desire immerses viewers in a world where passion and desperation coexist, illustrating how human desires can lead to devastating consequences. The film stands as a testament to Lang’s direction and the film noir genre, encapsulating a timeless narrative of love, betrayal, and the inexorable pull of fate.

Thanks for a good movie!
Highway Patrol with Broderick Crawford is just great
If I could be anyone else born in the 20th century it would be Captain Glenn Ford. A man's man and a ladies man like no other. He was born the same year as my father.
G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria Grahame was a real Beauty. ❤ And Kathleen Case was prettier than miss America , I'm sure Glenn Ford was in love with her ❤
Adapted from a Zola novel? Fascinating, a bit weird, too.
have to say Renoir's original is better than this Lang version
I love this movie . Films today are not close to this era of films
What are those many antennas shaped like crosses on the side of the trains track at the end of the film?
Was that appropriate for a woman to show up with such a bra that her tits are going upwards? It's either provokative or ridiculous. And embarassing in any case. And she appears too fake to look beautiful anyway.
… And another one comes…. lying at home with make up and high heels and proceeds to stand on the sofa with the shoes on….. I find all this quite disgusting, I don't remember Zola being so vulgar… Maybe this movie is not for me!
Clearly, there was a writers strike, or they ran out of money at the end of this picture.
One of my favorite movies.
Fritz Lang
I loved this movie, and especially the railroad motif. Funny, but the opening sequence was fast-motion: that is, the train hauling butt would have gone right off the rails in the footage of the train riding through turns in the track.
This film is a joke compared to Jean Renoir’s.
Great film-Thank you So much 😊
"Uncle Joe", before he was movin' kinda slow at the junction.
R.I.P. Glenn Ford
