Invasive fungal infections – The new threat | DW Documentary
Invasive fungal infections are increasingly leading to life-threatening diseases worldwide. And in agriculture, fungi pose a massive threat to harvests. And the available antidotes for humans and plants are increasingly losing their effectiveness.
Worldwide, fungal infections are already responsible for three times as many deaths as malaria. Experts are extremely concerned about infections caused by invasive fungi, as the numbers are rising rapidly.
The focus is on two types of fungi: Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida auris. Both have been classified as particularly dangerous by the WHO. Since the discovery of Candida auris, there have been repeated life-threatening outbreaks worldwide, especially in hospitals.
Up to 60 percent of infections are currently fatal. The fungus is spreading rapidly. So far, it has been detected in more than 50 countries. Molds such as Aspergillus fumigatus are also a cause for concern, as the fungi are now resistant to many drugs and disinfectants.
The documentary shows what tulips, molds and pneumonia have to do with each other, and what role intensive agriculture and climate change play in the spread of fungal infections.

Eat meat and stop cultivating plants. Cultivating plants cause bacteria and fungi to be released in the air, food and water.
Cancer has been hypothesised to be a fungus.
😮 oh my word after all these years this has just come out and I'm 57 I'm from the country how did I make it all these years running through Fields with flowers😂😂 you are so pathetic😂😂
Lots of appreciation for this tremendous work
Maintenance of susceptible host populations provides an ongoing environment for parasitic adaptation. Adaptation presents risks and benefits, but it's a good bet that any dominant monocultural population is likely, at some point, to experience population crashes due to epizootic outbreaks.
The last of us
new bio weapon
Zer Gut! A great report on mold spores. I had an allergy to leaf molds in the fall season. An immune compromised could even die.
The last of us scenario
Worst infections I ever had to treat in humans!
A friend in our village developed a dry cough and general malaise. She was back and forth to the dr and the hospital. It wasn’t until she told me that she was having trouble with rot in the fashionable wood cladding of her new build home that the penny dropped ( i’m a retired radiologist). I wrote her a note to her GP to refer her to a respiratory specialist as i believed she was suffering from Allergic BronchoPulmonary Aspergillosis, which was found to be correct. She had all the wood cladding removed and the walls rendered.
I skaperverket er det ikke noe nytt….Det som er nytt er et svekket immunforsvar etter nye injeksjoner!
People have become blasé, they believe that a few pills will cure every infection, so they don’t take precautions. It’s not just fungi that are posing problems, there are increasing incidences of untreatable protozoal infections. If you are gardening always wear gloves and NEVER handle slugs or snails.
Wieso gibt es die Doku nicht auf Deutsch? Wofür zahle ich Rundfunkgebühren?!
The same thing happens in the microbiome. By giving an “azole” or other fungal medication it eliminates or greatly reduces one fungal issue which leaves an opening for other more invasive funguses or bacteria’s to flourish and fill in that space. Hence why we as a species are losing entire bacteria species in our microbiome which in part can explain why so many people have varying degrees of unexplained illnesses.
Per Google; In June 2025, two Chinese national researchers, Yunqing Jian and Zunyong Liu, were charged by U.S. federal prosecutors with smuggling a dangerous agricultural fungus into the United States. Authorities described the fungus as a potential "agroterrorism weapon.
Life will always find a way.
Biodiversity is our strength.
They are poisoning us it's simple
"Fear the outside world" 🙄 "stay inside" "hygiene" 🫠etc
The tilting of our planet effects the way the sun hits the ground. This causes the light to not get where it is needed to kill these invaders.
Nausicaa in the Valley of the Wind
Even before 3 minutes into this; I was already thinking about possible exposure with Lucas and the other Vancouver contestants on Alone; living and sleeping outside! Then they start talking about Vancouver Island!!!
23:00 the crop is probably exposed to fungal infection at the edge from grazing animals, not from lack of fungicide
34:40 disinfectants are ineffective because 10 % bleach kills hardly any resistant spores. IPA kills even less spores. 10 % bleach plus some vinegar to lower the pH to about 4 kills even anthrax spores but might generate harmful vapors so needs proper PPE and ventilation.
Corporations is a bad word! The cause of all suffering.
Perhaps a phage solution could be explored as an additional tool
focusing on the 0.01 % of fungi that are sometimes human pathogens invokes prejudice. just like focusing on the worst 0.1 % of any race, but at a species level instead.
people will get the idea that they should spread fungicides – which will eliminate many beneficial and neutral fungi, and cause fungi to develop immunity.
Is this ai narrated? It is really good but also a bit bland.
Who is ready for the real live action of the last of us? I am certainly not.
Fungus feed on inorganic material also. You could probably just have the patients ingest a great deal of salt which kills yeast. Maybe a safe level of dehydration.
Fungicides should be used like a surgical strike. Not sprayed intensively. It soon becomes useless.
My first research was about entomology and resistance; after that, it was mainly about microbes in soil organic matter and climate change. I DO NOT LIKE the sensationalist style of this documentary; I guess it is made to "worry/attract more clicks". I'll repeat this doc with my mother. As a scientist, I was grabbing each time one of us spoke! especially how most of them are neutral, without such a NOVELA!
Gibts das auch auf Deutsch???
Last of us not by cordyceps but by other fungi
How do you diagnose these if they are in the nose? They do not say nothing of diagnose methods….
The Last of Us had the apocalypse correct.
Mold is also in old books/bookstores and old churches as I painfully discovered when exploring my new home of Belgium!
Where can i find this but in german?
No easy answers to be sure, but let’s hope we find some new ones, because this is frightening.
China; The gift that keeps on giving. Wake up. Recently "researchers" from China have been caught here in the US with deadly mycological agricultural agents.
Excuse the ignorance, but isn't this a scenario that AI is supposed to help with?
