Is the sea swallowing up the land? | DW Documentary
Flat landscapes, endless views, screeching seabirds in the blue sky. Cows graze on the salt marshes, and all around: the sea. A snapshot of life on the northern German ‘hallig’ or island of Oland. But the idyllic scene isn’t immune to the impact of climate change.
The peaceful habitat faces a very real threat. Global warming is causing the sea level to rise inexorably, flooding not only pastureland but also endangering residents’ homes. The film accompanies them as they deal with the challenges and do what they can to make their hallig crisis-proof.

This year's minimum Arctic sea ice extent was 26% larger than 2012. BBC said the Arctic would be ice-free by 2013. NOAA data.
This is no surprise, temperatures are slowly increasing not as a result of CO2 increases if you study long term climate records. We are still in an ice age so humans will be done when we come out this, and we cannot control Mother Nature. So enjoy while you can!
Do they only get cold in the torso or what. Every single one of them had shorts
Aren't marshlands aka wetlands?
This used to be land in the ocean and was claimed. The sea is just reclaiming
Cow drive for about 12 cows with about 12 people, what a wast of time. 10 million euros, for how how many people 18 ! Waste of money, unless that is all coming from the tourist income.
Yes! The climate has always been changing ever since the dawn of time when our Earth came into existence. We should make plans as to how we will adapt to climactic changes, rather than fooling ourselves that we humans have the ability to manipulate our climate.
Interesting to see the progress that conservatives have made. First, they completely denied climate change, then they denied man-made climate change, now they are simply fighting the climate for the sake of conserving the very culture that denied it to begin with. Interesting.
Come back when the sea levels actually has started to move. According to the infamous film by Al Gore ”The Unconvenient Truth” the sea levels would have risen 6m from 2006 to today…
I'm surprised that despite the fact they live next to the sea and has flooded and prone to more flooding, their homes are right on the ground. I wonder why they don't build them raised on stilts or pylons.
No, next question
No.
It’s called the lowlands for a reason.
