Anniversaries, birthdays, and holidays can all start to blur together when you live a life of exploration and adventure. For Jason and Nikki Wynn, a couple of modern-day documentarians and cultivators of curiosity, celebrating their 18th wedding anniversary was far from traditional. With their boat undergoing warranty work and typhoon season fast approaching, the couple found themselves in Cebu City, opting for a practical anniversary celebration.
Instead of a romantic getaway in the mountains or a spa day, the Wynns decided to focus on practical matters, like doctor’s appointments, purchasing gear for their upcoming remote passage, and tackling a backlog of work. While changing each other’s bandages may not be the most romantic gesture, there’s something to be said about being productive and accomplishing tasks together.
Despite the lack of traditional romance, the Wynns have learned that celebrating special occasions doesn’t always have to be extravagant. Sometimes, being practical can be just as sexy. And after 18 years of marriage and 15 years of traveling full-time, they’ve learned to celebrate the small moments and appreciate each other every day, not just on anniversaries. So, here’s to practicality, productivity, and the least romantic anniversary ever – because sometimes, that’s just how life as nomads goes.
