One year of Israel’s war on Gaza: An open-air prison under Israeli control
For the past year, the people of Gaza have been living under the shadow of Israel’s relentless war on their homeland. Even before the war began, Palestinians in Gaza were already caged in and cut off from the rest of the world. For 17 years, Israel has imposed a suffocating blockade on the coastal enclave, severely restricting the movement of people and goods in and out of the territory.
The blockade has turned Gaza into an open-air prison, where nearly two million Palestinians are trapped in dire living conditions. The lack of access to basic necessities such as food, water, and medical supplies has created a humanitarian crisis of epic proportions. The people of Gaza are forced to live in constant fear of Israeli airstrikes and incursions, which have destroyed homes, schools, hospitals, and other vital infrastructure.
The war has only exacerbated the suffering of the people of Gaza, with thousands killed and injured in Israeli military attacks. The indiscriminate bombing of civilian areas has left a trail of destruction in its wake, with entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble. The psychological trauma inflicted on the population, particularly children, is immeasurable.
Despite the overwhelming odds stacked against them, the people of Gaza have shown remarkable resilience and determination in the face of adversity. They continue to resist the Israeli occupation and blockade, demanding their basic rights and freedoms.
As the world marks one year since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza, it is imperative that the international community takes decisive action to hold Israel accountable for its crimes against humanity. The people of Gaza deserve justice, dignity, and the right to live in peace and security. One year on, the siege on Gaza must end, and the people of Gaza must be granted their freedom and independence.
