When Jaha Dukureh was an infant, she underwent a harmful traditional practice. At just 15, she was brought to New York and forced into marriage with a 45-year-old man she had never met. A decade later, Jaha returns to her native Gambia in West Africa, determined to confront the customs and beliefs—within her own family and community—that nearly derailed her future.
Jaha’s Promise is a powerful story of survival and transformation, filled with the emotional weight of personal, familial, spiritual, and political struggle. Through Jaha’s own powerful testimony, family archives, and interviews with those who witnessed her journey, the film traces a life shaped by resilience, setbacks, and ultimately, empowerment.
Caught between two cultures—Africa and the United States—Jaha often finds herself not fully belonging to either. But she refuses to be seen as a victim. Instead, she challenges global power structures and demands respect for the rights of girls and women everywhere. As Jaha says, “In our culture, a woman is built on sacrifices.” Jaha’s Promise captures not only her story, but the unyielding spirit behind it.

when the women describe being held down and cut at 9 I did close my eyes cause just the imagine pain was terrifying . load of respect to this women but part of me feels sorrow for her. she never going enjoy having sex . sigh that pain never going away. the extent of women suffering is on a unparalleled scale. how she not broken is amazing. even how she got to describe giving birth . it was traumatic to just listen too.. and the fact some women don't believe they have the right to be happy. their existence is soly for a man bwnninir
Good for you, my lady. The breaker of chains and generational patterns. 🌷🌷
❤ Righteous Anger! God Bless Her She is very Brave and mutilation is WRONG.
STOP THIS PRACTICE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.
Sorry for your pain and all who have suffered from FGM 💔
We see You We feel You
We stand together.
Thankyou for this documentary.
Only subcultures multilate their females,in a physicaly, psychologival way or both
Кто же придумал весь этот ад на земле?
These selfish men who want to keep the practice of FGM going don't realize that many women can still have vaginal orgasms…especially if that little vital part is missing. Even if not attracted to her husband she can still fantasize about other men…..and still get off one way or another.
The reason of this barbaric "tradition" is not a lack of education, but misogyny! Viewing women as things and toys or servants for men. When they start seeing women as humans, they will change it.
Good luck to her!
I have Muslim friends from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Kashmir, Pakistan and many other places and they don't practice FGM. The idea of it horrifies them. My friend from India's father was a well known Imam who wrote books, was interviewed on TV shows and had radio podcasts on his views of Islam. He was against FGM and forced marriages. His daughter, my friend didn't marry till she was 26 and it was a man of her own choosing whom she was much in love with. She went to law school and got her degree and she now has a great career and 3 beautiful teenage daughters. Her marriage is very happy and they are still in love after 20 years.
A week old baby doesn't have a choice, but her parents do.
As a Gambian all my siblings has gone through this painful journey called FGM, i also believe it's right to cut them but by watching this documentary of jaha, let say no to FGM. None of my people will go through this again insha'Allah
So proud of Jaha!! Very inspiring documentary about Jaha’s own battles and her campaigns to get FGM banned. Huge congratulations to Jaha and her husband for his support, and to her daughter and all the girls and future women of Gambia, Africa and the World.
My story still can’t fully forgive my parents for their ignorance against my body even though I love them but they hurt me as a girl 👧 pain is in the heart and body never the same 💔💔Jaha is from my country Gambia 🇬🇲
Amazing documentary, thank you. This woman's journey was just so inspiring. Her strength and courage overcame so many obstacles. Her sheer determination gives us all hope that things can change for the better!
Bless you all for giving this poor woman the voice she was deprived of for so many years 🙏
I'm simply speechless that such an evil practice ever existed
He elävät muusta tietämättä.
