Journalists in danger: the “Forbidden Stories” network | DW Documentary
The dangers facing journalists are increasing worldwide. This not only applies to war situations: Journalists are also increasingly exposed to physical violence and threats in peacetime. How can journalists protect themselves and continue to do their work?
French journalist Laurent Richard is committed to ensuring that investigative journalists network internationally. He wants them to work together — for their safety, and to protect independent journalism.
In 2015, Richard witnessed the bloody attack on the editors of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo: He was working in an office next door. Shortly afterwards, he and other investigative journalists founded a collective called ‘Forbidden Stories.’ The aim is for investigative journalists around the globe to safeguard research findings by colleagues under threat. That way, these stories can still be published, even if those colleagues are silenced. The motto is: “Killing the journalist won’t kill the story”.
