Anything with William Bendix in it is worth watching.
Thanks from a William Bendix fan.
You'd think that, after getting horrible reviews for playing the title figure in 1948's disastrous The Babe Ruth Story, William Bendix would want to stay far away from movies about The Great American Pastime. But two years later, the tremendously likable actor took another swing, and we're all the richer for it! Delightful farce about an electrician and family man who keeps losing jobs because he continually Ferris Buellers them to go to baseball games until karmic justice has its way and he becomes that most despised of players on the field…an umpire. Before becoming a cult director and Jerry Lewis favorite, Frank Tashlin wrote this, peppering it with sharp dialogue and wonderful slapstick, including the finale and a terrific bit involving an inflatable chest protector. (At times this movie is also quite racy, especially for a 1950 family movie.) Director Lloyd Bacon, who's done everything from the groundbreaking musical 42nd Street to the poignant war film The Fighting Sullivans to the far more sentimental sports drama Knute Rockne All American, handles it all beautifully. And the satire on extreme fan (remember, it's short for "fanatic") behavior is still VERY pertinent; if you don't think so, remember how badly Philadelphia Eagles supporters just treated Taylor Swift at the Super Bowl just for showing up to cheer on her KC Royals boyfriend. The more things change, the more they stay the same…even 75 years later! 9/10.
Thank you, I remember seeing this movie as a kid "probably" on Saturday or Sunday afternoons. Looked for it a few times on YouTube but never found it. Lots of memories….thanks again.
I really wanna stream Mr. Sardonicus on my YouTube live stream mystery science theater 3000 style. I want to stream later today for it so if you could respond before then I’d appreciate it. Thank you so much.
all big money sport is rigged to maximize profit.
Very enjoyable film. Just in time for spring training. Thanks.
I will never understand how people can lose their minds over a game. The worst are parents who turn into monsters at kids' games.
Is Mr O'Brian in miss?
