Hi from Astoria, NY almost 90 degrees. Cool watching you. Thank you and your dad.
It must be very interesting to explore your family history. Really enjoyed this livestream 😊
I’m surprised you’re not in Guangzhou. My ancestral home.
Taishan is the origin of my family roots as well. Its modern buildings and new architecture are totally different from the days gone by of dirt roads, villages and farmland. Villagers would need candlelit lanterns to find their way home at night in the village. Insects could be the size of large hamsters constantly feeding on rice, grains and seeds on the ground. In the western world, maybe 5% of the old toishan generation speak the dialect. The young generation now learn mandarin & cantonese as it is more common and useful. The dialect will eventually literally die off. Your pronunciation is a bit off but I can understand it. Sometimes you mix it with cantonese. The dialect is harsh, blunt and has hard tones and sounds whereas cantonese is lighter and softer in speech. The first Chinese immigrants to the western world did indeed come from Taishan. There was so much hardship for the poor villagers working in the farms all day to put food on the table. And it was worse during the Japanese invasion that no one can imagine or learn in school, unless you trace your family history and learn from their experiences.
The distance between Taishan and Hong Kong is approximately 186 km (116 miles).
O yea our home town AK there’s good place with WiFi when I went back it’s next to higher building with dimsum 😅 I ate udon and ice coffee there it’s on the 1st floor. But dim sum place is 2nd floor I think it might be next to a hotel or something 😂. You can also get egg tarts and congee @KFC 😂. In Guangzhou schools now they also don’t teach Cantonese anymore only place is Hong Kong it’s going to slowly disappear. The government wants everyone to speak mandarin instead.
Taishan is also part of my origin story and this video really resonated with me. Toisan was the first language I learned via my parents and extended family even though I was born in Toronto. Decades later, I still speak it mostly fluently with some English tossed in where needed. It's amazing to see how developed Taishan is now. So many changes!
Hey, AK. You know What.
Geographically, there is a City call Xinhui that used to be is very influential in Guang Dong, and Economically is a largest GDP contributor among Taishan, Kaiping, Jiangmen, Heshan, Enping.
However, Under the CCP’s control, Xinhui has been divided and many areas were under Jiangmen. Even so, Xinhui’s economic still the largest due to Xinhui with the largest commercial district among all other 5 cities. But in early 2000-2010, Xinhui further divided again, now Xinhui is under the Jiangmen City’s control, and Jiangmen’s GDP already over Xinhui, but still remain the 2nd place among the 5 cities.
The fate of Xinhui is similar to Brooklyn City and New York City historically. If Brooklyn City is not merged into the New York City, it is still a top 5 cities, and may even better than Chicago.
