Merz’s 80% Return Plan for Syrians Stirs Controversy
In a bold and contentious proposal, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for the return of 80 percent of Syrians residing in Germany to their homeland within the next three years. This announcement, made during a press conference alongside Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, marks a significant moment in Germany’s ongoing dialogue regarding its Syrian refugee population—many of whom fled to the country during the peak of the migrant crisis nearly a decade ago.
Al-Sharaa’s visit to Berlin represents a pivotal first since he ousted longtime dictator Bashar al-Assad in 2024, symbolizing a potential shift in Syria’s political landscape. The discussions between Merz and al-Sharaa primarily focused on reconstruction efforts in Syria and the future of approximately one million Syrians in Germany, a community that has significantly influenced Germany’s cultural and social fabric.
As Merz lays out this ambitious return plan, he faces substantial backlash. Critics of the proposal argue that the conditions in Syria remain unsafe for the millions who fled violence, repression, and instability. Protests erupted in Berlin following al-Sharaa’s arrival, with demonstrators voicing concerns over his past as an Islamist leader, raising questions about his commitment to democratic governance and human rights.
Middle East expert Christian Hanelt from the Bertelsmann Foundation underscores the complexity of the situation. “The prospect of return is fraught with challenges, particularly regarding security and the reintegration of returnees into a post-conflict society,” he explains. Hanelt’s insights highlight the careful balancing act that Germany must navigate as it considers integrating humanitarian policies with the political implications of the Syrian conflict.
DW political correspondent Bernd Riegert added another layer of scrutiny to the conversation. “The timing of these discussions coincides with rising sentiments in Germany regarding migration, making this a politically sensitive issue for Merz and his administration,” he reported. Riegert emphasized that public opinion will play a crucial role in shaping the outcome of Merz’s return strategy.
The plan has ignited a broader debate that touches not just on the future of Syrian refugees, but also on Germany’s identity as a host nation in the face of a changing geopolitical landscape. As the world continues to grapple with the implications of conflict and displacement, Chancellor Merz’s return agenda may redefine not only the lives of those affected but also the very fabric of society in Germany.
As discussions continue, the fate of a generation of Syrians—caught between a past of trauma and an uncertain future—hangs in the balance, inviting critical examination of what truly constitutes safety and stability in their homeland.

Really so fast To be German citizen!!!

Looks like EU has become a friend of Al Qaeda.
Left is National Socialist German Workers Party all over again only 10 times worse and spreading across all of europe. Worse than WWII. Save yourselves and vote AfD before its too late.
They should return home and rebuild they own countries up . The war started because they didn’t want the Government. Well that Government as gone. We don’t like some Governments but we don’t run away. When they return it . Will free up jobs for Germany 🇩🇪 people
The leader of ISIS is welcome? Is this a joke?
The Syrian president should have insisted on the goal of 100% return this is how you create value for your people.
If Syria is stablized and the economy is improved life in Syria is a thousand times better than Germany.
No more Herzlich willkomen?
Merz’s comments about 80% of Syrians in Germany returning home within three years continue to reverberate. Syria’s interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa has rejected Merz’s claim that the figure came from him and called the statement “somewhat exaggerated.” During an event at the Chatham House think tank in London on Tuesday evening, al-Sharaa attributed the proposal to the German chancellor. Al-Sharaa said Syrian refugees have a right to return voluntarily and with dignity, and that their return will hinge on the progress of the country's reconstruction.
…you let them in!, welcomed them, let them stay for decades, gave them a great life and now you want to just get rid of them?? 😝
Not gonna lie, just here for the racist comments 😁
To claim that Germany gave Syrians their knowledge is pure ignorance wrapped in arrogance. As per World Bank (2021) Syria’s adult literacy rate stood at 94.4%. Many Syrians arrived well-educated, skilled, and professionally experienced contributing to Germany.
Syria is a beautiful country and DW reporters should definitely all be sent there to show us such family reunions
over 500k syrians returned from turkey to syria after the fall of asaad, with no resulting problems for the turkish economy, yet these leftists want people to believe that germany will be in deep trouble if the syrians left. GTFOH
DW lets the racism stay, they could delete if they wanted. Syria is ruled by a Western backed Al Queda dictatorship that they know will end poorly so they can keep Syria weakened. This is just blank racism from Germans expecting Syrians to leave while sheltering white European for the same reason.
❤❤
So only 42% of syrian refugges are actually employed in germany , with one fourth of male population and two third of the female population not working . I wonder how the gentleman thinks they contribute to german econmy in any sort of way . Just lame excuses are all . They dont make econmic sense
Ahmed al-Scharaa already denied to take back syrians. You can stop telling your lies Deutsche Welle.
Any Syrian who hasn’t got citizenship has absolutely no say in the matter. They were aloud in as an act of charity. They don’t have a “right” to be there.
Why?
Shame on EU leaders to accept a genocider and shaking his hand and laying red carpet for him.
Asylum is given to give protection to people who are fleeing serious danger and cannot safely return home. Those who wanted to integrate got their Germen citizenship.
And for the retirement system will work whom exactly ?!?
THE GERMANS UNTIL 80y ?!?
OUT WITH THE ULTRA-CAPITALIST MERZ FROM GERMANY !!!
Ramadi ex iraqi officers….cut the supply lines of usa troops ….and Ramadi assassins took out…the usa cia officer from Mississippi …shot him in his suv…and took his laptop
Dont think about it….ottoman guards are controlled by brits…
Secular Syrian suni…are in Lebanon….lots went under ground
Instead of flat out sending everyone back, why don't the German companies that employ Syrians open up operations in Syria? It would greatly benefit the reconstruction efforts, the economy and be an encouragement to anyone wanting to move back by having job security upon arrival.
Germany is lucky to be able to offer Syria heavy industry investment to build rail, mining, metallurgy, manufacturing, aerospace, shipbuilding, banks, etc.
