Once poor, always poor? | DW Documentary
One in four of Berlin’s children lives in poverty. The district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf is a particular hotbed of social disadvantage. People who grow up here have little-to-no chance of upward social mobility. But that doesn’t stop them from fighting for their rightful places in society.
Pierre Hollberg has a budget of ten euros a day for groceries — to feed six people. His wife is living with severe disabilities. They share a four-room apartment just under 90 square meters large with their four children. The parents’ bed is in the living room, and there’s no space for a dining table. His mother-in-law, Evi, supports the large family any way she can. Every two weeks, she visits a charity food bank, which distributes groceries for free.
There are many reasons people may fall into poverty: illness, unemployment, and separation, included. Single mothers get hit particularly hard. Jessica is a mother of three from Hellersdorf with two vocational qualifications. But she spent many years unemployed after separating from their father. Recently, she’s begun working full-time, but earns less than she when she received social benefits. She still believes it’s important to have a job so that she can be a good role model for her children. She’d like to spare them a life of financial precarity.
For the past thirty years, the charitable organization Die Arche – or ‘The Ark’, has been giving kids in Hellersdorf a chance. Their support for children and families is funded entirely by charitable donations. Pascal ‘Kalle’ Höhn used to be one of those children. After a difficult upbringing, violent outbursts as a teenager, and two and a half years spent in juvenile detention, he’s now training to become a welfare assistant. At The Ark, he wants to help young people avoid ‘going down the wrong path’ as he once did.
Poverty has many faces, and can affect anyone. It strips people of their dignity, robs adults of hope, and restricts opportunities for young people growing up. The risk of falling below the poverty line is on the rise — even in a wealthy country like Germany.

Nose rings, tatoos, so concerned about music, low education. All that's missing is an expensive hairdo and nails. Anyone notice a recurring theme? Not the government's fault. The blame for their problems is staring at them in the face in front of a mirror.
Cancer patient with Cigarette!
Am trying to understand how having a roof over your head, clothes, food, electricity and water about Poverty? They should talk about People who can't afford Luxury, but if you can afford basic needs then you're out of Poverty Bracket
Can always afford cigs!
Why do poor people have the most kids. I don't get it.
Everyone is an expert on how they should get out of poverty… it's a system meant to keep you grounded because the bourgeoisie cheated the system

BEST GERMAN POLITICIAN CAN DO IS TO BLAME IT TO FOREIGN COUNTRIES LIKE RUSSIA AND CHINA FOR THEIR OWN INCOMPETENT

Nobody is starving in Germany 🇩🇪 but the main problem people face is that the quality of food and clothing has deteriorated so drastically in recent years that most of what is on offer a person with minimal common sense would not consume had it even been offered for free.
Incredibly I find Switzerland 🇨🇭 to be a lot better value for money these days because basics such as bread, cheese, meat, snacks etc.are of superior quality and can be found in even the moderately priced supermarkets plus you need not buy bottled water because no matter where you stay in Switzerland you can open the tap and drink pristine and tasty water which is no longer the case in many parts of Germany.
In the months of April and May I had business to attend to in Germany.
I initially based myself in Frankfurt am Main but the urban environment and the high cost of accommodation prompted me to head east for the first time.
I opted to stay in Gera, Thuringia where I found people to be friendlier but the quality of food was so low that for 3 weeks I ate only in one Vietnamese 🇻🇳 take away (it was the only food venue of acceptable quality besides a wood fire pizza restaurant in a city of 150,000 inhabitants!
Though I already paid for train membership for three months to ease travel to cities I had engagements in I "escaped" to Switzerland and opted to fly from Malpensa (It is officialy called Milan Malpensa Airport but is actually closer to Ticino, Switzerland than it is to Milan) and Basel Mulhouse airport and am honestly glad I need not return to Germany for at least another year.
I think they still afford to eat. Looking above average BMI and not thin, Sorry gotta say it
It is possible to get out of poverty, especially in Europe, where education is (mostly) free. But you need an opportunity and have to back it up with hard work when it comes. I've grown up really poor, but my parents were smart enough to stop after two kids, pushed us to get good education and in the meanwhile they worked hard and long hours to get out of poverty. They are not rich, but they are comfortable – however they don't travel, don't spend on unnecessary stuff, saved hard for most of their life, and still live within their means.
I've went for education in high earning field – after the changes in the industry, I no longer like my job, it is slowly killing my soul, but it is manageable and pays well. I am investing most of my money, build wealth and do stuff I enjoy in my free time. But even as a high earner, I don't go to expensive vacations, mostly hike locally, spend time with my family and friends , I don't have expensive hobbies even though I can afford them. Because my generation has it hard and I don't see any good future ahead, so I am doing my best to build my wealth now, when it is still possible. I don't indulge on expensive brand clothes and items, which would make me look rich, even if I own multiple properties and decently priced stock portfolio.
It is all about stable environment, good choices, determination, hard work and a bit of luck. If you pop children since you are 15 years old, keep getting pregnant with unreliable partners and by making children you can't afford, you keep digging your own financial grave. Family is great, but expensive. It is even harder for females, since they usually get left behind with their children. Not everyone has equal opportunities, but a lot of people just close the doors by their choices and then complain about their situation.
Im sure the Government has free anything and everything for invaders.
You should visit India and Pakistan to see the real poverty looks like.
The problem that Germany is facing is not the Foreigners but their own Politicians, people have to understand that the Politicians are just fighting for Power and they are using issues like migration and Nationalism but real problem is increasing debt and failed govt. with no feeling for their own Taxpayers.
how is it possible to turn your back on the workers who did their share
So many refugees from U are treated like privileged get way more money and no need to work.Komisch reality 😅
here in Afghanistan we call it a luxury life but for Germans with respect its poverty Lols
