Orca interactions – Danger in the Strait of Gibraltar | DW Documentary
Since 2020, reports have increased of boats being rammed by orcas along the European Atlantic coast. The whales make a beeline for the hulls and rudders. Researchers are trying to find out why. It is curiosity? Competition for food? Or maybe they’re just playing?
In the oceans of the world that are their realm, orcas have no natural predators. The highly developed marine mammals move in close social structures and are unmistakable due to the white spots behind their eyes. Also known as killer whales, they have a prominent triangle-shaped dorsal fin.
Since the end of the first coronavirus lockdown in May 2020, an Atlantic orca population has been ramming sailing boats in the Strait of Gibraltar, off the Iberian Peninsula and up into the Bay of Biscay off the French coast. The animals follow the boats and ram the rudders until they are destroyed.
There are several theories explaining the phenomenon. Among them, the idea that this behavior is learned and spread through imitation within the pod. Experts call the encounters “interactions” and no humans have been harmed so far.
In other regions of the world, other new behaviors have been observed in some orca populations. Orcas are sociable and intelligent animals. Sometimes, they are obviously trying out new things, like techniques for hunting.
Researchers largely agree that the Gibraltar killer whales are under severe stress. There’s heavy marine traffic in the strait and along the entire Iberian coast. Humans and animals compete for tuna, and noise pollution is high.
The documentary hears from researchers, scientists and the boat crews themselves, about the unusual behavior of these animals.

i care about Orcas and not a little bit about yachts
The Orcas dont want humans taking all the Tuna thats why they are upset 😮
Could there be something in the rudder that the Orcas want..?
i mean, is it covered with a paint or something that they find tasty, or perhaps intoxicating.
maybe there angry ,cuase we humans steal all there food mostly in that kinda boats
They smart, they like we won't kill you but destroyed you property
mother nature has retaliating with numerous plagues and disaster and she always failed, but covid isn't the last, there will be more viral coming in to get rid the real virus, us, human.
It's well understood that orcas have never attacked a human in the wild. I'm curious to know how these orcas would react to a human that jumped in the water during one of these " interactions "
Incredible animals, if they damage boats its for a reason, probably because they know the damage humans have done to the oceans
I'm building a ORCA boat, based on the boat from the movie JAWS,
It will be used to show how much plastic has washed ashore on remote beaches, check out my small utube channel if you want to see more , thank you

Nice video!
Lets go to the jungle and see if lions attack us. Then we'll do a scientific study 🤦♂️
Just stay out of their habitat..
36:22 Funny or maybe not ! How a so called scientist makes such a recommendation as forbidden sail boats from straight of Gibraltar until Orcas forget their behavior. If her income depended on Sail boat season she wouldn't be so fast to say so…
You have to stop giving human feelings to wild animals. Yes Orca are smart.
But theyre more than likely lashing out due to having had a negative interaction with sail boats in the past.
Or they just think its fun.
This video isn’t just about animals—it raises important questions about our relationship with the ocean. I hope we learn to live in better harmony with nature.
