Senior US Official Emphasizes New Indo-Pacific Partnerships at NATO Summit | DW News

The upcoming NATO summit will have a strong focus on forging new partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region, according to senior US official Douglas Jones. In an interview with DW News, Jones emphasized the importance of cooperation with partners in the Indo-Pacific to address common challenges faced by NATO members globally.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine was highlighted as a direct threat to alliance security, with support from China and North Korea impacting security in both Europe and the Indo-Pacific. Jones expressed NATO’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression and stated that concrete decisions will be made to provide assistance and accelerate Ukraine’s reform progress towards eventual membership into the Alliance.

Jones also addressed concerns about Russia posing a significant threat to allied security. NATO has increased its deterrence and defense capabilities, with more allies meeting their commitment to spend 2% of GDP on defense.

In light of potential political changes in the US, including the re-election of Donald Trump and the possibility of the country withdrawing from NATO, Jones emphasized the importance of the Alliance for Euro-Atlantic security. He stated that NATO is stronger, more united, and more important than ever before.

Overall, the NATO summit is expected to provide Ukraine with concrete and practical support, while also focusing on strengthening partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region and addressing common security challenges faced by NATO members worldwide.
