Severe Ice Storm Alert for 30 Counties Across Wisconsin and Michigan

A widespread and potentially destructive ice storm is set to hit parts of the Upper Midwest, with officials issuing urgent warnings across northern Wisconsin and Michigan.

The National Weather Service has placed around 30 counties under Ice Storm Warnings, cautioning residents about life-threatening travel conditions, power outages, and extensive tree damage through Saturday.

Widespread Ice Accumulation Expected

Forecasters warn that the storm will bring a dangerous mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow, leading to significant ice buildup across affected areas.

Ice accumulations could reach up to half an inch in some regions, particularly in northern Wisconsin counties such as Vilas, Oneida, and Lincoln, as well as parts of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Snow and sleet totals are expected to remain relatively light—generally under two inches—but the primary hazard will be the thick glaze of ice forming on roads, trees, and power lines.

In Michigan counties including Marquette, Baraga, and Ontonagon, ice accumulation between one-tenth and four-tenths of an inch is forecast, combined with wind gusts up to 35 mph. These conditions significantly increase the risk of falling branches and widespread outages.

Travel Could Become Nearly Impossible

Authorities are strongly advising residents to avoid travel during the peak of the storm.

According to the National Weather Service, “travel could be nearly impossible” as untreated roads quickly become slick and hazardous. The warnings highlight that both Friday evening and Saturday morning commutes will be heavily impacted.

In Wisconsin, areas such as Ashland, Bayfield, and Sawyer counties are expected to see some of the worst conditions beginning Friday afternoon. Officials noted that the combination of ice and wind will make driving extremely dangerous, with reduced traction and the possibility of stranded vehicles.

Power Outages and Tree Damage Likely

One of the most serious concerns is the potential for widespread infrastructure damage.

Ice buildup on power lines and trees, combined with strong wind gusts, is expected to cause outages across multiple counties. Heavy ice can weigh down branches until they snap, often bringing down power lines in the process.
