The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Snow Squall Warning for several parts of Michigan, cautioning drivers and residents of sudden, dangerous weather conditions expected to impact travel and public safety.
The warning remains in effect through Tuesday evening as intense snow bands sweep across the region, reducing visibility and creating icy road surfaces.

Snow Squall Explained
Snow squalls are fast-moving, intense bursts of snow, often accompanied by strong winds and plummeting temperatures. Unlike regular snowstorms, squalls can lead to whiteout conditions in minutes, making roads especially treacherous. According to meteorologists at the NWS in Detroit, today’s system poses a “serious threat to travel safety” across highways, especially I-94, I-75, and US-131.
“These conditions can be life-threatening if you’re on the road when one hits. Visibility can drop to near zero, and roads can ice over almost instantly,” said Greg Carbin, Chief of Forecast Operations at NWS.
The warning specifically covers Midland, Bay, Saginaw, Genesee, Ingham, Jackson, and Washtenaw counties, with squalls predicted to move southeast through the afternoon. Some areas could experience brief but intense snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour.
Michigan State Police Respond and Advise Public
In response to the alert, the Michigan State Police (MSP) have increased patrols and issued advisories for travelers. MSP’s Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“If you must travel, slow down and leave extra space between vehicles. Be prepared for sudden whiteouts and icy pavement.”
Authorities are also urging people to carry emergency kits in vehicles, including blankets, flashlights, food, and phone chargers in case they become stranded.
