Tragedy struck in South Korea as a passenger plane crashed and burst into flames while attempting to land at Muan International Airport. The Jeju Air Boeing 737 jet, carrying 181 passengers, appeared to skid off the runway and crash into a concrete fence after its front landing gear failed to deploy properly.
The devastating incident, which occurred at around 9am local time (midnight GMT), resulted in the loss of at least 120 lives. Rescue efforts have thus far been grim, with only two survivors – both flight attendants discovered at the tail end of the plane – pulled from the wreckage. Firefighters have been working tirelessly to extinguish the blaze that engulfed the aircraft.
Footage of the crash shown on local TV depicted smoke emanating from the engines before the Boeing 737-800 was completely consumed by flames. Images following the incident revealed extensive destruction, with the majority of the plane razed apart from the tail section.
This heartbreaking tragedy has left many in mourning and raised questions about aviation safety and emergency response protocols. The South Korean National Fire Agency, alongside other authorities, has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
As the nation grieves the lives lost in this devastating event, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all those affected by this tragedy.
