Syrian rebels name Mohammed al-Bashir as interim prime minister

Syrian rebels have made a significant move in the ongoing conflict in the country by appointing Mohammed al-Bashir as the new interim prime minister. The 41-year-old has been tasked with leading a transitional government until March 1st, 2025, following the toppling of long-time leader Bashar al-Assad.

Bashir, a trained engineer with a degree in Sharia law, previously led a rebel-held area in northwestern Syria. He also has experience working for the development and humanitarian aid ministry of the Islamist group Hayʼat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which is leading the rebels.

The appointment of Bashir as prime minister of the “Salvation Government” in January 2024 signals a new chapter for Syria, with the rebels seeking to establish stability and governance in the war-torn country. Journalist Ossama Muhammad provided insights into Bashir’s background and the significance of his appointment from Qamishli, in northeastern Syria.

Professor Fawaz Gerges from the London School of Economics weighed in on the different rebel groups in Syria and the moderate approach that HTS has been adopting. The discussions shed light on the complexities of the Syrian conflict and the potential paths forward for the country.

The announcement of Mohammed al-Bashir as interim prime minister marks a key development in the Syrian civil war, and it will be crucial to monitor how his leadership shapes the future of the country.
