Syrian rebels have made a significant move in the ongoing conflict in the country by appointing Mohammed al-Bashir as the new interim prime minister. The 41-year-old has been tasked with leading a transitional government until March 1st, 2025, following the toppling of long-time leader Bashar al-Assad.
Bashir, a trained engineer with a degree in Sharia law, previously led a rebel-held area in northwestern Syria. He also has experience working for the development and humanitarian aid ministry of the Islamist group Hayʼat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which is leading the rebels.
The appointment of Bashir as prime minister of the “Salvation Government” in January 2024 signals a new chapter for Syria, with the rebels seeking to establish stability and governance in the war-torn country. Journalist Ossama Muhammad provided insights into Bashir’s background and the significance of his appointment from Qamishli, in northeastern Syria.
Professor Fawaz Gerges from the London School of Economics weighed in on the different rebel groups in Syria and the moderate approach that HTS has been adopting. The discussions shed light on the complexities of the Syrian conflict and the potential paths forward for the country.
The announcement of Mohammed al-Bashir as interim prime minister marks a key development in the Syrian civil war, and it will be crucial to monitor how his leadership shapes the future of the country.

So you got an SDF person to talk about Damascus ?
Sometimes when you have an economist there, you would think you would hear about the economic impact this will have on the Syrian people. I for one am saddened to hear that they are replacing one Dictator for another.
Damn his zabiba is big, not a good sign
There is a $10 million bounty on the leader of the Syrian rebels. That means Israel will cover the cost if they have to strike him.
Those who love Syria will encourage them to build internal governance structures – instead of blaming Israel.
He was the only one who had a suit
I am still very cautious at what will happen next. SDF occupies a large chunk of territory, ISIS pockets remain, and the rebels are a kaleidoscope of differing factions. Peace is not guaranteed whatsoever as the next logical step in Syria's story.
DW has a very strange choice for a reporter in Syria. The reporter is from Kurdish corner 700 kilometers from Damascus and ruled by SDF. Obviously, DW reporting is biased as it doesn't involve a neutral Arab Syrian for its reporting.
Am in Uganda but am feeling so happy for this victory of the Syrians and his excellency Abi Mohammed Jolani Long live and may God protect your Victory and the peace of the entire Syria💛💛💛💛💛
After learning about Dr. Fawaz Gerges, I don't trust a word he says. The guy is either a paid shill, or a charlatan or both. His latest book is a compilation of anti-semetic stereotypes, Iranian propoganda and revisionist take on history.
Mr Fawaz you know better, speak the truth. Unless you agree with what about to happen…
Freedom is everything for everyone we need to protect it with every means at our disposal
You Guys you need to be respected highly i mean (HTS), you Syrians and your new leader i love you so much and am so proud of because you showed no cowardice, congratulations and peace is what i wish.
kurdish area only peaceful area in syria with no islamists or terrorists taking over.. and people live in peace day to day
Agreed to hand over power? Really, does anyone think that he didn’t have to hand over power, whatever power even means for him right now?
The guy literally has his whole CV 😂
Assad 🇸🇾, Putin, Xi, and Kim must understand that:
– it's never a good bet to bet against democracy!
Jolani and friends are worse than Assad
Julani saves millions of Syrian lives.
Good 👍 Decision 👍❤

Since the army vacated and people have taken arms from the arsenals, the first move he will make is to ask people to turn in those weapons. Once people turn in their weapons…the interesting part will start. I was a young kid in Iran when the revolution of 1979 happened. The first few months were cool. Then it went downhill. Good luck Syria.
بقي العالم صامت على جرائم لاسد حتى وصل المتشددون الى الحكم يبدو ان الشعب السوري لم يستفيد شيء
None of these guys you have can answer a question without starting to tell a neverending bedtime story
It has been very difficult to find information about Mohammed al-Bashir. This interview is the best I have seen. Nice work DW.
Will Syria be a democracy? and will they respect women ?
Syria will not be more pluralistic than Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, or any other Arab country.
He's talking about the strikes on Israel but he doesn't talk about how it's preventing dangerous war equipment and chemical weapons out of the hands of these unstable elements. It's disingenuous to bring it up without that salient point.
