In a recent interview with Al Jazeera, Arwa Damon, the founder and president of NGO Inara, shed light on the severe psychological distress being experienced by children in Gaza. Damon shared a heartbreaking conversation she had with a father and his five-year-old son, who expressed the sentiment that it would have been better to have died at home rather than continue living in the current war-torn environment.
According to Damon, the ongoing conflict in Gaza has created a war within each individual, as they struggle to cope with the traumas and triggers of the relentless violence. The lack of a safe space and the constant threat of further attacks have left residents with little respite from the chaos and tragedy that surrounds them.
Damon also highlighted the dire situation at the Rafah border crossing, the only evacuation point for Palestinians in Gaza. With the crossing blocked off, those in need of urgent medical treatment are unable to leave, risking permanent disability or even death.
As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, Damon’s words serve as a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict and the urgent need for humanitarian intervention.
