The Challenge of Mining Greenland’s Natural Resources
In the high-stakes world of natural resource extraction, few discussions are as contentious as the debate over Greenland’s untapped riches. The Trump administration’s keen interest in acquiring Greenland for the purpose of mining zinc, copper, and rare earth metals has reignited conversations about the territory’s vast potential. However, experts warn that infrastructural challenges pose significant obstacles to such ambitious endeavors.
In a compelling feature from "60 Minutes," geologist Minik Rosing and Amaroq Minerals CEO Eldur Ólafsson emphasize that despite the riches lying beneath Greenland’s surface, a lack of infrastructure would require years of development before any mining operations could commence. The rugged terrain and extreme weather conditions further complicate the logistics of establishing the necessary facilities.
This segment not only sheds light on the economic implications of mining in Greenland but also raises questions about environmental and geopolitical considerations. As the world becomes increasingly reliant on rare earth metals, the quest for sustainable and ethical extraction practices becomes more crucial than ever.
For an in-depth look at these pressing issues, watch the full "60 Minutes" episode and stay informed about the ongoing developments in this vital conversation.

1:58 (time): Ocean water is normally clear. Why is Greenland’s ocean water freezing “green”? This might be a clue to something.
If it's not yours don't touch it.
This is about the North Pole. Allegedly, there are tunnels in Greenland that lead to the North Pole, where the black hole vortex and Rupes Nigra are. Other names for Rupes Nigra are Black Rock and Mount Meru. Access to those areas are almost humanly impossible, thus, they want to use tunnels to get there. They show you the tunnels at 2:25 (time). That’s not a mine.
Trump = ignorance personified…if his lips are moving hes lying.
I can already hear MAGA scream "They are stealing OUR gold" 🤣
Every time there are natural resources., you see the USA coming in offering ''security, freedom and democracy''. 😂
USA could lease Greenland long term or Australia, Canada, Norway, Switzerland and Germany could team up to mine there.
TRUMP SNAPS AFTER HATE-WATCHING '60 MINUTES' President Donald Trump called for CBS to lose its license over the latest episode of "60 Minutes." The network "is out of control, at levels never seen before, and they should pay a big price for this," he wrote
“They are not a ‘News Show,’ but a dishonest Political Operative simply disguised as ‘News,’ and must be responsible for what they have done, and are doing,” the president wrote. “They should lose their license!” He urged FCC Chair Brendan Carr, who was named to the position by Trump, to deliver “substantial” penalties to the network for what he called “unlawful and illegal behavior.” “CBS is out of control, at levels never seen before, and they should pay a big price for this,” he wrote.
All the people running and working in that gold mine in Greenland are Icelanders. Not sure why.
Minik Rosing is an acclaimed Greenlandic scientist. Widely respected for both scientific, cultural and historical knowledge. 👏
Trump thinks Greenland is Green!
This reminds me of the movie "Don't Look Up." In one scene, a shuttle mission with an astronaut was launched to divert an asteroid from hitting Earth. However, the mission was aborted when it was discovered that the asteroid contained valuable minerals, which attracted a billionaire who decided to send a mission to mine it.
I know this isn't related to the minerals in Greenland, but it just made me think of that film.
This will be forgotten in 6 months.
Датчане Олаффсон и Гослиг заботятся о процветании Гренландии??? Местных жителей не спрашивают.
As @thomasgajhede says, Minik Rosing knows his trade better than any US politicians. As a retired mining geologist in Greenland, primarily Black Angel Mine, but involved in the 1984 Constable Pynt oil project in east Greenland, and a closed anorthosite mine northeast of Nuuk, there are only three partly viable mining projects besides the Naqulaq gold mine. The Black Angel, the Isua Iron Mine, and the said anorthosite mine. And of these, Black Angel has been closed down at least 3 times, Isua would cost $ 1 B to open, but it will have severe winter transport issues, and the same for the last, though it would only need some $ .2 B to reopen. And forget all oil, the prospective areas have been subjected to continental drift vulcanism, that's why all oil companies backed out around 2000s.
Rich? Thought it was about security!?? Make up (orange) your mind Donnie boy, eyeliner 😂
@ 1:38 he basically goes on to contradict himself naming a lack of infrastructure and workforce as a reason why mining minerals isnt profitable in Greenland…yet who is responsible for that? The Denmark Govt. It is a Denmark policy choice not to invest in infrastructure and to make it either easy or difficult to bring in workers. Not saying that it will be but it could be different story if it was under US jurisdiction.
America is talking already about mining Greenlands resources. Amazing. No wonder the world is boycotting American products and services.

If USA gets Greenland, Denmark will lose so much power. Denmark that once were a huge empire of Viking warriors that once conquered England and many others. Will become politically just small little useless Denmark.
It's possible, at what expense.
Not many mines have rare earths, it's possible to get the minerals from Greenland.
Just have to build the supply chain up……
Stay away Yankees
The Americans are welcome to mine all they want, there is a reason they have not done so. But Trump is never honest to the American people
Supply Chains and Refineries. I thought the minerals came in bars just as in Minecraft.
Spread the money out to the people that live there and make them rich
America has lost its ways!
Orange threats 😂 Green land don't trust the orange Felon 😢
Greenland's resources belong to the people of Greenland. That is why Denmark has not pressed on to mine, except for a few minor mines. The resources do not belong to the USA! STAY AWAY!
already 16 seconds in and hearing "(Greenland) a territory that president Trump said he would like to acquire" is wrong. he said he would annex it by military power.
Nice to see and hear Minik Rosing. He knows what he is talking about.
Maybe mine in the US?
Greetings from Denmark 🇩🇰! Well, we've reached the point where one of the world's most credible news channels is being called "Fake News" by a Fake President and businessman! Don't worry! The part of the world that still has its common sense has full confidence in 60 minutes!

Infrastructure. Roads. Who exactly would be using these roads? Where would you get the traffic from? Fuel? Gas stations? Bridges? Tunnels? Who would keep these roads free of snow except for a few weeks in the summer? These are the three biggest towns in Greenland by population, – forget about cities, there aren't any:
1 19,279 Nuuk
2 5,620 Sisimiut
3 4,737 Ilulissat
Traffik in Greenland takes place via boat or helicopter. Planes occasionally. In Grenland people have boats the same way Americans have cars. And please remember the total is 56.669 persons all in all country wide
