The Cuban Missile Crisis – How nuclear war was avoided | DW Documentary
In October 1962, the world narrowly escaped a nuclear war between the US and the Soviet Union. US President John F. Kennedy halted the escalation at the last minute. But behind the scenes, Washington had made concessions to the Kremlin.
In the early 1960s, Berlin was already a flashpoint of the Cold War. The USSR issued an ultimatum demanding the withdrawal of Western Allies from the divided city. The US responded by stationing nuclear-capable medium-range missiles in Turkey, near the Soviet border. Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev saw this as a provocation.
In response, Moscow moved to station its own missiles in Cuba – just 150 kilometers from the United States. The plan – operation Anadyr – began in June 1962, under strict secrecy. Around 80 Soviet ships transported more than 50,000 soldiers and dozens of nuclear-capable missiles to the Caribbean island. It was not until October that US reconnaissance aircraft with high-resolution cameras discovered the missile sites. On October 22, Kennedy addressed Americans in a dramatic televised speech. He announced a naval blockade against Cuba and declared the Soviet missiles a direct threat to the US.
As the US Navy mobilized to stop the Soviet ships, the world held its breath. A single mistake or misunderstanding could have resulted in a Third World War – with nuclear weapons.
Khrushchev recognized the danger and proposed a diplomatic solution: the withdrawal of missiles from Cuba in exchange for a security guarantee for the Castro government and the dismantling of US missile sites in Turkey. Kennedy agreed. Publicly, the US presented the outcome as a triumph – but at their insistence, the withdrawal of US missiles was kept secret.
Despite having achieved his goal, Khrushchev was removed from power in 1964. The Cuban Missile Crisis highlighted the fragility of the power balance between the two nuclear superpowers, and led both to take measures to prevent future escalations.

Imagine if trump has the same face-off with china
Watching❤❤
Wish it wasn't 55+. That's a great value.
It's funny how americans who tried to crush Cuba now preach Russia about peaceful coexistence
First, West provokes Russia (then USSR), hammers them to the point of desperation, & when Russia finally reacts in retaliation, well, then the whole world must side with the west 😂
To shorten it: US initiated the escalation by putting nuclear weapons in Turkey. Soviet responded by protecting Cuba and sending a nuclear weapon.
Soviet initiated the de-escalation by sending a letter that US will not invade Cuba and remove the nuclear weapons in Turkey.
Credit to President John F Kennedy where it's due… he ultimately handled the situation really well… 👏👏
Lesson: It's always USA acting as an agressor without thinking of the consequences. They just think others won't retaliate out of fear. Never worked for them.
When are we going to have a movie where Liam Neeson plays Fidel Castro!?
Evil World 🌍
Why would nuclear tipped missiles in Turkey been so existential for the Soviets? Were the missiles stationed elsewhere in NATO in Western Europe taken that much longer to reach Moscow?
I don’t think the real cause of the Cuban Missile Crisis was the missiles in Turkey. The real root cause was Kennedy’s failure to remove Fidel Castro in 1961 and the political caution that crippled the Bay of Pigs invasion. Additionally, Kennedy ignored his CIA and military leaders when they warned that the Soviets were preparing to place nuclear weapons in Cuba months before it happened. Had Kennedy acted decisively then, the Soviets would never have had the chance to turn Cuba into a nuclear base.
That was the Shah of Iran.
Fidel a true animal guy was savage the highest IQ president to ever have lived no other president will ever has his IQ, now he just used it for evil but a true master mind
JFK the lasted US president with balls
History repeating itself.
When was Kennedy aware that the deployment in Cuba was an answer to deployment in Turkey? – Aren't you assuming something here?
Remember the name Vasily Arkhipov.
Imagine Trump in that situation, Imagine because I don't think we'd be here to can do it.
There’s really no lector that could pronounce “Chruszczow” correctly ?
The question from the outset should have been: was the USSR or Khorochove himself, as impulsive as he was, was ready to risk a war with the US in the age of MAD for the sake of Cuba? Of course not. But the mixture of ideological and power rivalry had indeed, understandably, created that doomsday impression that a nuclear clash had become imminent.
26:20
At the end cuba and soviets got destroyed.
Perhaps for the same reason nuclear war was averted during Vietnam, Afganistán (by USSR), Afganistán (USA) and Iraq etc. etc.
Because nukes don’t exist 🤔🤷♂️
putin fans trying to re-write history, yet again, in the comments. Truly boring, silly and delusional people.
Similar to the argument going on now with 'Russian aggression' on one side, 'NATO expansionism' on the other.
4:35 omg Frank Morris escaped to Cuba! i knew it
A very good documentary!
Turkey missile crisis
The late President JFK was a smart man. He took his time and consulted all options before taking a decision.
what iniated the crisis was the jupiter missiles that the US wanted to station in turkey
the soviets reacted and that is how the crisis begun
This is left documentary, watch right ones too to be ballsnced…
We nearly ends the world human huh😅
Excellent refresher, thank you DW
The depth charges were training rounds. Not real charges it would have been hard for the sub captain to tell though.
Our current leaders never learn from the past thats why we are on the messed situation..
What’s interesting is how poorly informed people are. Just like these incursions in Europe, all people saying shoot down the Russian jets (an act of war). Saying Türkiye did this.
But after that the Russians response was action in military, economic, and diplomatic.
Türkiye APOLOGIZED! When it escalated Türkiye invoked Article 5 of NATO, it FAILED.
Stop the escalation.
Now because of Ukraine and the Europeans warmongering elites. Russian nuclear capable bombers are flying to Venezuela in this new Foreign Entanglement. Signals are being sent as the escalation worsens. This foreign entanglement continues to try and drag the USA into war,
Now the Europeans want a WW3. But want the USA to pay and bleed for it. Just like the Europeans in faking NATO unity. Under the Europeans belief that if they invoked Article 5 the USA would come in guns blazing. Annnnnnnt! Wrong answer! Article 5 guarantees support which each individual nation deems necessary. In the USA under the War Powers Resolution (1973) gave Congress this decision as well as the US citizens. So that is the reality.
Thank you for this video!
Now u will understand why Russia 🇷🇺 will never let Ukraine 🇺🇦 into Nato,, this just answered urs questions 😮..
