The Ugly Truth About Yogurt (You Won’t Like It)
In “The Ugly Truth About Yogurt,” Dr. Eric Berg dives deep into the misconceptions surrounding commercially available yogurt. While often hailed as a health food, many yogurts may actually undermine gut health. The video reveals that most commercial options are double pasteurized, significantly reducing beneficial live cultures. Moreover, the fermentation time is shockingly short—typically only 1 to 2 hours—compared to the 8 to 36 hours needed for traditional yogurts to develop healthy bacteria.
Dr. Berg highlights how added sugars, modified starches, and artificial ingredients can harm the gut microbiome, even leading to issues like leaky gut. The video emphasizes that if the yogurt isn’t labeled with live cultures, it likely lacks the probiotics we seek. Instead, alternatives like kefir and homemade fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, are recommended for their greater health benefits. Ultimately, viewers are encouraged to rethink their yogurt choices and consider the real impact on their gut health. Watch to uncover what every health-conscious consumer should know!

The benefits of yogurt and other fermented foods do not lie in their ability to reseed the gut. The real benefit is the change in environment. Fermented and cultured foods change the pH and oxygen levels in the gut. They also provide food and metabolites for the gut microbes, which can also help activate dormant microbes.
Many microbes have been suppressed by antibiotics, junk food, and other factors. Many of them are keystone microbes, which are vital for your gut health.
Unless your yogurt says it contains live and active cultures, it’s been double-pasteurized. Commercial yogurt typically ferments for 1 to 2 hours, whereas traditional homemade yogurt ferments anywhere from 8 to 36 hours. By the time you eat commercial yogurt, there are significantly fewer CFUs of bacteria than stated on the label.
Sugar in yogurt can kill the friendly bacteria and feed pathogens in your gut. Added ingredients, such as pectin, gels, and guar gum, inhibit bacterial movement. Yogurt fermented for only 1 to 2 hours will not have the right texture or thickness, so ingredients such as modified food starch, carrageenan, and polysorbate 80 are added. These ingredients can destroy the mucosal layer of the gut, leading to leaky gut and inflammation. Many commercial yogurts contain artificial sweeteners, which are known to alter the gut microbiome.
Many processed yogurts contain bioengineered food ingredients that may contain traces of glyphosate, a patented antibiotic. This means the very product you’re consuming to support your gut health could be destroying your gut microbes.
Probiotics contain significantly more microbes than yogurt. These freeze-dried microbes are often able to reach the large intestine and reseed the gut, especially when taken repetitively. Kefir, which contains both bacteria and yeast, is also a better option than yogurt.
Sauerkraut is an excellent food for gut health. It contains polyphenols, postbiotics, SCFAs, sulforaphane, organic acids, glutamine, and the compound s-methylmethionine.

I'm more concerned with the amount of AI clips in this video than the amount of sugar in my natural no-sugar-added plain yogurt.
Carrageenan is bad too.
People say that taking Antibiotics kill off ALL the bacteria in the Gut. Is that true?
Love it. Bindblowing Dr.berg
I make L Reuteri yogurt that Dr Berg recommends doing.
Shout out to the CHOBANI yogurt consumers!! $6.49 (32oz) 😒
Because you eat fake yogurth . Taste the real Bulgarian yogurth and you will see the difference
I try to have kefir, or Greek yogurt, I love milk too.😮
We have raita with our food often.😊
So disappointing about the yoghurt from the shops😢
I see 90% plus of yogurt on the shelves more as puddings than actual yogurt.
Coscto has great Organic Plain Greek Yogurt. Not grass fed, but it has Live/Active cultures.
Do they lie to is about everything?
What about kimchi?
Make my own, it’s easy, I make it strain it out that it’s like cream cheese. I use the left over whey to make sauerkraut, pancakes, sometimes boil grains and pasta.
I eat kefir, kombucha, and sauerkraut/kimchi chi.
I bought some kimchi at costco on a whim last month because it was discounted, and it made quite a difference. It came in a plastic container which isn't good for acidic food, but ate it anyway. Eating beans used to be a disaster, but now anything exiting smells of proverbial flowers compared to before. Going to mess around making the yogurt with a precision hotplate, as these tiny bits of biology seems really amazing.
My understanding is fiber is needed to feed gut biome
Who else just randomly found Dr Berg videos one day and had been watching ever since? 😊😊😊
what about perons with fatty liver and elevated cholesterol. can they have grassfed kefir with all that saturated fats. i guy the silk almond yogurt no sugar is that a good option.
I'm very surprised he didn't mention kimchi in this video. It's like talking about great basketball players and excluding Michael Jordan.
I make all of my fermented foods at home including Organic Grass Fed Yogurt made with Whole Milk, I ferment it for 24 hrs., we also prepare our Sauerkraut, Natto, Kefir, and Kimchi. When possible, preparing fermented foods at home is best.
.
Want to feel more sick, eat Yogurt😂
At this point I don’t know what’s healthier anymore ugh 😩
What do you mean by reseed?
Wow, good video. No wonder you got 14.1M subbers. Well blubbering gratitude to you, good sir!
For yogurt I enjoy the brand Cocojune. I'm gluten and dairy intolerant. I found the plain pure coconut option to be quite delicious.
I eat OîKOS Yogurt Dr Berg is it ok? Ingredients are Skim milk, Ultrafiltered milk, cream, water, corn starch, active bacterial cultures.
A Kraut here… the ancestors knew it😅
I can not cosume kefir, bloats me so bad I can't stand it
Yogurt should contain only pure milk with all fat included , because without fat milk wont be fermented, and natural probiotic that can be obtain home made chesee yellow water thats also for the first time next time used yogurt itself to ferment milk to yogurt. All those flour gluten thats how they make yogurt from 2% percent fat milk , now i understan.
Dr Berg have you seen the videos by Guy Daniel's, The Microbiome Expert, on youtube? He says probiotics and fermented foods are not good for you. Just wanted your opinion. Thanks.
HEY DOC, THIS MISLEADS….YOU'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT THE REAL YOGURT, YOURE TALKING ABOUT CHEAP COMMERCIAL "YOGURT" WHICH ARE LIKE DESSERTS. THE REAL YOGURT IS THE GREEK YOGURT AND IT'S VERY HEALTHY AND NUTRITION
hey Dr Berg, i need your help. Im working in the copper smelting plant and i have high concentration of lead, arsenic, mercury etc in my blood. Any advice how to reduce that concentration?
Take a look at major brands of sour cream , heavy whipping cream, half and half they use all the different gums to thicken them their basically skim milk with thicker’ s like carrageenan …
Only thing fermented stuff do is give me the runs.
I only eat Fage plain greek yogurt. The ingredients are few and all pronounceable. Is this yogurt considered healthy?
Plain Keifer liquid has more/other probiotics than yogurts.
I absolutely LOVE me some Cabot Greek yogurt XD
Thank you for this helpful information to better health.
What brands of Kefir and Sauerkraut do you recommend?
I wish they would stop putting carageenan gum in have whipping cream. It was fine without it.
It's loaded with carbs. Yeast. Fungus. Gross.
💚 Dr Berg
HELLO DR BERG. I have followed your advice to make kirfer so I haven't bought yoghurt. KIRFER IS SO GOOD FOR ME. Thank you so much Doctor Berg for always updating information. ❤
IT IS SO WELL ANALYSIS. THANKFUL DR BERG
👍👍👍
Doc, what do you think of adding powdered non-fat milk to the yogurt before fermentation. I do that for my homemade yogurt as a thickener.
That's not yogurt – that's American yogurt.
Thats not real yogurt,
