The silent heroes of Marseille's drug districts | DW Documentary
The high-rise housing estates in the north of Marseille are in the grip of drug gangs. Residents of these underserved neighborhoods are forced to live with violence and a lack of opportunities. But not everyone is willing to accept the situation.
In the areas known as the “Quartiers Nord” or “Northern Quarters” of Marseille, drug trafficking and gang wars are a part of everyday life. Drug-related violence has claimed dozens of lives in recent years and the French government has been unable to improve the situation, leaving residents in a hopeless situation. But Amine Kessaci wants to change that. The 21-year-old is the founder of an organization called Conscience. The group campaigns locally and citywide for better living conditions in these neighborhoods. It also supports families who have lost loved-ones to drug-related gang violence — something Amine has experienced himself.
Another ray of hope for these troubled districts is a converted firefighting bus that provides medical assistance. Doctor Slim Hadiji and his team offer preventive care and hold information events. They also make house calls and accompany patients to medical appointments. The initiative supports those who would otherwise receive little to no help.
Meanwhile, local football club FCL Malpassé is an important community hub and a safe haven for the children and young people living in these areas. The club’s coaches are available around the clock. They hope their club can offer young people not just a safe place to go, but also a chance to improve their lives.

This is very worrying and sad
A few notes: 18:23 a boy with 7 siblings…. Poor people’s mentality… how do you look after 7 kids? You don’t.
Also , I see a lack of ethnic French to compare and understand better.
Unfortunately I suspect the way this documentary was conducted, specially without any data and comparisons, will only fuel the far right.
Do better DW
It would help legalising hash first
The neighborhood looks familiar. Perhaps Athena by Romain Gavras was filmed there? Unforgettable piece from 2022!
I thuoght Marseille was in France!

People living in rat cages, what could go wrong?
Marseille has always had challenges, I went there in 09 – it was worse. It’s a port city, has mafia there and doesn’t get as much funding as Paris.
the youth soccer team will be France's national team in a few years. just like the current team, you will be lucky to find one white French player.
A brave boy, drugs and drug dealers are a havoc for societies around the world.

I thought France was a luxurious country full of baguettes, cheese, wine, and wealth. Is this really France?

such a contrast, 180 degrees different, to the USA healthcare system were your health is purely business. Miserable. Bravo to the great doctors of France that truly care for their patient's wellbeing.
Thank you for sharing these slices of people's lives in Marseilles, and some of the circumstances that shape their lives.
I have traveled by train between Italy & Catalonia more than half a dozen times but never stopped to visit Marseilles. Although I gave meet some friendly youth from the area on the train; they were all of North African descent.
Haiti in france
It’s very refreshing to see a hopeful soul like Marwan in a troubling neighbourhood like that. It’s also very wholesome to see his parents being very supportive of his pursuit of professional football!
This is France? It looks like the south Bronx.
I thought I was looking at north africa.

Immigration Policy of France
literally destroying French Cultural identity. But, People and Government are OK with it.
Side-Effects of Colonialism.
Marseille has been France's drug center for going on seven decades.
Cultural differences.
They could all go to school and get jobs. But only some do.
Most want their mercedes and expensive clothes, so they go for the fast money, and take risks.
Sad that people lose their lives over this.
If you mass import people of archaic tribal societies you will become an archaic tribal society.
Common sense.
Marseille is battling the devastating results of open EU borders. And no matter how bad it becomes, the EU insists the borders stay open. They never learn and are never responsible.
