The smartphone dilemma – TikTok, Snapchat and how to protect your kids | DW Documentary
Many children and teenagers spend hours every day on Instagram, TikTok or other platforms. More and more families and schools are setting clear boundaries to counter the constant distraction of social media.
Studies have linked excessive smartphone use to depression, anxiety, and difficulties concentrating. This documentary follows several families and schools that greatly restrict smartphone use for children and young people. Martin and Ursula Novotny in Sevelen, Switzerland, are convinced that phones and social media are just as addictive as alcohol or drugs. They waited until their children were older before giving them a cell phone of their own. The Lyceum Alpinum boarding school in Switzerland is equally strict: During the day, all devices remain locked away; older students get their cell phones back after class, while younger students only get them for two hours in the evening. The result: The children are significantly less distracted in class and have actual conversations at breaktime. How much screen time is healthy, and at what age does it make sense to give a child a smartphone? Child and adolescent psychotherapist Nady Mirian explains which parental rules work for social media. The schools and families featured in the documentary are not opposed to new technologies, but they advocate responsible use. Is it still realistic for children today to grow up without a smartphone — and could it actually be preferable?

That’s funny I was just thinking about how grateful I was for my childhood outside with friends, animals, bugs. I loved them. I hated the TV.
Dumb phone until 16. Communication, yes, internet connection, no. It's a trap. it's not safe, and it's not healthy for their brain development.
And what about Meta? FB is a scourge corrupting young people.
i deleted most of my social media accounts and i don't miss them
Simply stop making babies. No babies, no one to play games. # Childfree movement
Awareness of social media's negative side effects is important, as excessive use is linked to mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and poor sleep.
Vaping too has gotten younger and younger children hooked. It starts from home in my opinion. Get your teenagers flip phones and not smart phones. I was 15 when i had my first phone and I wasnt missing anything because barely anyone called me. I barely used my phone as a teenager and I was always outdoors in town and travelling to different cities and getting lost and finding my way again at that age and I had a mother who never cared about me so she didn't care if i came home late or stayed out because she never cared.
You can't protect the kids. There's something sinister which was knowingly backed into the design, from device to apps.
It’s not easy here in America if you let a kid go out walking around the street or the parks with their friends or by their selves they get the cops called on them.
Live without social media as much as possible.
The billionaires of tomorrow are the kids who are not addicted to social media
I personally think this very important in the future because this will get much more worse no matter what.
Give them just a 0c for their work no smart a phone for call and message it can do by a smartwatch too
Parents must focus their children… Life coaching is kind a solution and need early attention…
Wrong question: why give smartphones to pre-teens? The Internet was made by and for those with advanced degrees.
Children can use less advanced technology, like the aged with diminished capacity. Teens are expected to slingshot into adulthood with dubious preparation, so less dangerous.

I'm the one to view first. What would I get as a reward? 😂😂 And, of course, for the first comment? 😅
