The Vietnam War – Fighting against brothers and neighbors | DW Documentary
The Vietnam War went down in history as a US disaster. But the war was a true catastrophe for the people of Vietnam. Millions of soldiers and civilians were killed and others left maimed.
In 1954, Vietnam gained its independence from the colonial power of France. Shortly afterwards, the country was split into North and South Vietnam and a war broke out between the two parts of the country.
The communist North was supported militarily by China and the Soviet Union, while South Vietnam was supported by the USA. From 1964, the USA sent its own troops to fight in the Southeast Asian country. For the USA, the military operation ended in a debacle: the longest war in US history up to that point was lost, the nation was divided and the trauma of the war was deeply engraved in the collective memory of American society.
The media focus was squarely on the role and consequences for the USA. As a result, the fact that the conflict was also a civil war rooted in colonial structures and fueled by global power interests, was increasingly overlooked.
Ultimately, it was the southeast Asian country that paid the highest price: millions of soldiers and civilians killed and many people left maimed. After North Vietnam’s victory, hundreds of thousands of South Vietnamese disappeared into labor and re-education camps and more than a million people left the country in a mass exodus. The effects of chemical weapons such as “Agent Orange”, deployed by the USA in the conflict, are still being felt today.
Using original and archive material, the film tells the story of the Vietnam War, beginning with the Indochina War and liberation from the colonial power France to the 1990s, when relations with the USA were finally normalized.

This documentary is very one-sided and does not reflect the true essence of the war.
Shame on you DW, pushing half-truth is faking history.
đặt tiêu đề tẩy trắng cho bố Mĩ của DW. Cứ 30/4 là lại sủa tẩy trắng, lèo lái dư luận, sửa trắng thay đen, làm méo mó sai lệch bản chất cuộc chiến tranh. Đúng là lều báo phương Tây. Tột cùng của sự đốn mạt.
My grandpa said “the dumber they are, the more political they get.”
Btw. Vietnam economy is 33rd largest in the world now. After 50 independence after the American war in Vietnam, there are border war against Khmer Rouge & China ‘til 1989, the embargo from US & allies ‘til 1995. Why don’t you mention the present of Vietnam now like economic growth, free education & heading to free hospital fee? What is this broadcast btw? Is DW stand for dishwashing? Washing away all the things you don’t want ppl to see no matter it’s good or bad?
Fake document. Calling the VietNam war is wrong, but calling it a civil war is not acceptable. North VietNam was supported with military weapons by the USSR, and China. While in South VietNam, self-declared government led by Ngo Dinh Diem not only got weapons support by also got human resources from US and US's alliance(Australia, South Korea, Thailand,..). THIS IS NOT A CIVIL WAR. THIS IS A WAR AGAIN US's INVASION.
This documentary has too much distorted information.
Americans and the French got whooped in Vietnam.
This is so disrespectful to our country, a document with full of intention. There are so many flaws. Can't believe that I has watched a lot of documents in this channel
Why you make that documentary right in our Vietnamese victory celebration? Such a stupid documentary, you don’t understand anything about Vietnamese people and history, you should rather shut up than looking at our stuffs in western perspective
Biased documentary. We fight against USA, France and puppet gov. builded by USA. Now people are smarter, u could lie no one.
Shame on DW
A very important question to ask! Did South Vietnam forced its population to go to war like the Communist?
what brothers????? We fought the French and American not our brothers.
To Bernard George and DW doc. You aired a film as if the audience were gods with no roots, not citizens of a nation or another. You sought the narrative of a person who has seen peace and prosperity in their own homeland, when in fact, Vietnam was under French colonial rule for 8 decades, and you are from a nation influenced by capitalism and individualism. What do you know?
National identity can persist for millennia. A 3-decade period, millions of souls melded into one, was only a sped-up process of liberation. You think you're done liberating when the bullets stop? Hilarious. As if Vietnam can walk after freeing itself from a bear trap.
Capitalism brought bread and circuses only to hinder the progress of people's unification. Vietnam remembered being one, not one with a cancer tumour that got labelled as an unborn twin.
The thumbnail picture is the infamous "napalm girl", in which the US dropped napalm killing babies and children, old people. And yet, the tittle is about vietnamese killing vietnamese. 🫠🫠🫠
"Resistance War against America", not "The Vietnam war"
🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳
And what’s your point or purpose to post this video in this period when Vietnam is celebrating 50 years of unification? The war was ended half a century before. Are you trying to raise & encourage hatred among Vietnamese?
fake history, disappointed!
I am from Vietnam, and this is the cheapest documentary film I have seen.
They were not "brutally opposed to communism," simply told/forced to be and act so by their french imperialist handlers and occupiers. Same thing when imperial capital arrived in s different mask in the u.s.
"Vietnamese people against Americans and allies" pls!
This was not the Vietnam War; this was The Anti-American Resistance War in Vietnam. The resistance war against the United States was the Vietnamese people's struggle against American aggression and the overthrow of the Republic of Vietnam, a puppet government in the South backed by the US.
It’s interesting how so many documentaries about "The resistance war against the Americans and the traitors" are being aired this year. Vietnam seems to be gaining more recognition globally, but honestly, Western media can’t seem to stay neutral about it. Like DW—they weren’t even involved in the war, yet they put out a documentary and subtly steer public opinion, probably because they’re allies with the U.S.
Why can’t they just let us celebrate our reunification without interfering? It’s frustrating how they keep twisting things to fit their narrative, even after all these years. The past is the past, and those who were in the wrong will have to face the consequences. Let us have our joy—it’s our history, not theirs to rewrite.
More like fighting against the American imperialists. The documentary gives you a vibe that everybody at the time in Vietnam fully knew and understood democracy, capitalism, communism, and so on, even though Vietnamese people were busy starving and devastated by foreign colonization. It is completely nonsensical and stupid. The American administration and soldiers had no business being in Vietnam in the first place, and they could not have been more wrong ever since they chose to invest in French oppression — not to mention waging another war in Vietnam. It was never a civil war, but a resistance against the American imperialists and their puppets.
Same thing is happening in Ukraine and Russia is liberating it
It’s 50th anniversary of reunification which cost millions of death of Vietnamese & caused pain to millions of family including the ppl who still suffer from Orange agent. They left a destructive country, pain, poverty, starvation etc. and now we are rising as a united nation under the Communist Party.
Have you seen what is happening in Ukraine & what happened when you depend on other powers to protect your country? So you prefer our country to be forever separate like North and South Korea? And FYI, the US had shaken hands with Mao after their loss.
So ashamed for a Chanel with reputation to encourage the colonism, bullies and betrayers.
Please DO NOT make any other videos about Vietnam if your perspective is so unilateral. This is so disrespectful.
"whose population had just 300 days to choose which side" history full of such stories and always the everyday citizens suffer the most 🤬
Look like Germany trying to white wash people and start WW3.
DW is ultimately a western mouthpiece, therefore easily biased!
