The wonderful world of fungi | DW Documentary
Fungi form a hidden network that runs through the Earth like a system of life-giving veins. Scientists are only just beginning to understand the vital role fungi plays, poised between the plant and animal worlds. It’s a mystery that is gradually being solved.
Life on Earth wouldn’t be possible without fungi. Yet they largely elude our view, as they form a finely tuned network that runs through the soil of the forests. Everywhere on Earth. Whether in the centuries-old rainforests of Tasmania or in China’s Yunnan Province – researchers are trying to understand exactly how fungi maintain the balance of ecosystems.
So much more than mushrooms, fungi shape weather and support life on land. They’re also at the cutting edge of medical research, and even have the power to break down plastic waste.
Whether under the microscope or in the woods, the dazzling images in this documentary immerse you in the mysterious world of mushrooms.

Good
Absolutely INCREDIBLE photography/filming in this video. The time lapse stuff is just GORGEOUS. WOWSA! 👏👏👏👏👏
Great documentary, DW.
What a breathtaking documentary about fungi! It was so emotional, I teared up. 😢
This is info I already knew.
It is said that it's a good thing to learn something new every day, well that goal has certainly been achieved today. Many Thanks.
Excellent documentary as usual. These sorts of things show the utter resilience and complexity of life on Earth. It will outlast our brief tantrum of destruction, and when we have been reduced to a relict or have been altogether wiped out, the symphony will swell and expand again, and the beat will go on. It's a joy just to be alive.
This is a Hollywood level movie
Tell me it's Björk narrating this utterly Superlative documentary. I'm absolutely mesmerized.
Excellent…glory to the creator…it takes everlasting life to really appreciate and learn about God's creation…Roman 1:20
Björk, this is gonna be great
l love your documentaries.
14:37 The length of all mycelium on Earth is nowhere near half the diameter of the Milky Way galaxy. 🤣 That distance is 50,000 light years— and light travels at 300,000,000 meters PER SECOND.
Nature is impressive enough without making up things
❤❤❤
Wow Björk! I was thinking all the way through what a beautiful voice. Then the comments said it's her. Love that woman. Came for the fungi stayed for the narration.
Wow, i did not realise Tassie rainforest was contiguous for 65million years, thats insane…..❤❤❤
I'm just pondering the human arrogance towards the end…having mentioned fungi protecting/preserving their surrounding/needed circumstance (we know we actively ruin ours), how fast they adapt (we prefer control, domination, exploitation, arrogance while still believing we are in real control and "more" will always "be available"), that those who adapt survive…incl how they now eat our manufactured toxic problem, still continuing to how we want to study their behavior (not change ours) and how we supposedly will pass this on to so many generations. Shortly after talking about how much ancient forrest is cut down (that cannot be replaced by monoculture platation of "greenwash" eukalyptus, palm oil crop, feed crop for the ever growing animal agriculture etc. The hybris of human "kind".
Every now and then, DW takes a break from shameless propaganda to do something cool. This is one of those times. 👏
One word: Fascinating!
Let's face it. Fungi are older than us, wiser than us, and cooler than us. 🍄😎
👎👎👎 the narrator is terrible, very badly chosen. Decided not to watch this episode because of the narrator.
Thank you! ❤❤❤❤❤
DW has excellent quality documentaries!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
is it Bjork the voice over?
Much love from Kenya🇰🇪🇰🇪
Beautiful documentary. Biggest shame in Australia’s history is logging the Tarkine
