Protests in Ankara turned violent as Turkish opposition supporters gathered to demonstrate against the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. The clashes between protesters and police have escalated in recent days, with more than 1,100 people being arrested during six consecutive nights of demonstrations.
President Erdogan has condemned the protests, stating that they have transformed into a “movement of violence.” He accused Imamoglu’s Republican People’s Party (CHP) of provoking citizens and causing chaos, promising that those responsible for the unrest will be held accountable.
According to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, protesters were found in possession of dangerous weapons such as acid, petrol bombs, axes, and knives. Some of those arrested are facing charges for attacking police, damaging public property, and threatening public safety.
The tensions in Turkey continue to escalate as the demonstrations persist. The government is cracking down on protesters, while opposition supporters are standing their ground in defiance of Imamoglu’s imprisonment.
