U.S. Military to Deploy 700 Marines to Los Angeles Amid Ongoing Protests
In a significant move amid escalating tensions in Los Angeles, the U.S. military has confirmed the deployment of approximately 700 Marines to assist in managing the current wave of protests. These demonstrations have arisen in response to a series of intensified law enforcement actions linked to President Trump’s controversial anti-immigration policies.
The situation in California has become increasingly fraught after the president authorized National Guard troops to support local law enforcement in handling what many communities perceive as an aggressive crackdown on immigrant populations. California Governor Gavin Newsom has publicly condemned this decision, asserting he will pursue legal action against President Trump, describing the military’s deployment as a "deranged fantasy of a dictatorial president."
In the upcoming segment featured in the video, DW Correspondent Benjamin Alvarez Gruber provides an on-the-ground perspective from Los Angeles, offering insights into the sentiments of protesters and the local community’s reactions.
Scott R. Anderson from the Brookings Institution joins the discussion to analyze the implications of military involvement in civilian affairs, particularly how it may influence public perception and the broader dynamics of governance.
Law Professor Barry McDonald contributes further depth, examining the legal aspects of the president’s actions and the potential ramifications for civil liberties in America.
As the deployment unfolds, the national discourse around immigration policy, state rights, and military engagement in domestic matters continues to intensify, making this a pivotal moment in American political history. The situation remains fluid, and all eyes will be on Los Angeles as the Marines arrive to restore order amid ongoing unrest.

This is being used to create the consent of the people for mass, digital surveillance of all Americans by Palantir. The 30 billion dollar contract will be easily approved now. Americans shackle themselves and then the world.
California is a break away province..!!! .. hmmmm.. reminded me of Taiwan 🇹🇼..😅..
Mark my words, after california, New york is next, where military will be deployed.
3:18 “two different ways of dealing with this crisis.” What crisis?
America doesn't need a King Trump!
The adult in the army should refuse redeployments inside the US for now. They took their oath on the constitution and not DJT.
Your president violates basic constitutional rights, he is not longer based on rule of law. Your loyality for the people of the US and the constitutiion.
Stay at your bases!
Trump is moving quickly, in his 1st term during the Floyd riots he kept listening to bad advisors telling him to let Governor Walz mobilize the National Guard but he waited days to do it and the day he did was too late and the mobs burned down a police station and a city block. Never again.
A wannbe Dictator.
Land of freedom ❌
Land of hypocrisy 🤡
In this case the Governor is coming against ICE, federal law enforcement. So yes the president should send in help.
Marines ain't gonna play.
But he couldn't send the national guard or the marines for the January 6 insurrection… What double standards
He's not yet sure, who would fill the role of the "double S", Marines or National Guard
I think it adorable that Americans still think they have an independent judiciary. 😂
10:22 “a protest that has occasionally become violent” what violence did they commit? Should be included in the report, or the host should fact check this.
As a Marine veteran I am disgusted that active duty military is being used against U.S. civilians
Took only 5 years for the Americans to have a big riot again. I remember clearly we watched in TV for months! in 2020 summer. Cities burning, dozens of dead people, thousends injured, looting… Crazy Americans…
This is the country that is supposed to host the Olympics and World Cup? what a joke
What a beautiful sight to behold. Quoting Nancy Pelosi on Hong Kong Protest. What say you now Pelosi
Property is being destroyed, American flags are being burnt and foreign flags are flown. Yeah, active duty military has every reason to be there. Shame on those Americans participating in this chaos.
The Gov of California is not defending the Federal agents there, so the Federal government has a right to defend itself. The government can't just allow rioters to freely attack and destroy and prevent them from carrying out lawful orders!
Westwood, CA has a 25 story Federal Bldg, often the scene of protests in the past. I was there in 1972 against the war in Vietnam. Since local authorities have given up on protecting Federal Assets, we need the military there to protect workers and property.
About time! Restore law and order.
Protesters not making points by waving flags of foreign countries. If they are not here legally they can leave. Imagine a US citizen going to Mexico and doing the same thing. How well would that work out?
We've had riots in Los Angeles, but not at this time. There's no place for the guards or marines to sleep or eat. Added chaos 😢
