Why did the Neanderthals die out? | DW Documentary
Did Homo sapiens and Neanderthals share the same habitat for a long period of time? Excavations by a French research team at the Mandrin Cave suggest as much. The researchers’ work has yielded even more astonishing findings.
The extinction of the Neanderthals, the one species that dominated the Eurasian continent prior to the arrival of Homo sapiens, is one of the most puzzling topics in archeology. How were these two hominids connected? Was Homo sapiens partially responsible for the eradication of the Neandertals from planet Earth? Or did the two potentially coexist over several millennia?
A team of researchers led by archaeologist Ludovic Slimak are working in the Mandrin Cave to answer these very questions. Their findings are being examined by scientists from the French research organization CNRS, using state-of-the-art archaeological methods.
The Mandrin Cave has been the focus of several excavations since 1991. In 2015, a new discovery was made: Fossilized remains from the late Neanderthal period. The individual belonged to one of the last Neanderthal lineages. The archaeologists dubbed him “Thorin”. The find suggests that for a long time, Neanderthals lived very close to the newly arrived Homo sapiens – and that the two groups probably crossed paths.
Ludovic Slimak and the scientists from the French research organization CNRS provide an insight into the extraordinary results of their work.

Stopped watching at that "Professionally" slaughtered goat. All these research are good, yes, but not at the expense of any innocent animal.
Inbreeding/small gene pool, loss of habitat(they were specialized ambush hunters), competition from us with different hunting tactics (endurance and longer ranged weapons), most likely conflict between groups they might have been very strong but they where stumpy so we got cold weather grapplers VS hot weather strikers in a warming climate. The neanderthal overheated literally and didn't migrate north successfully(obviously) they must have had an unwillingness to migrate to more suitable grounds fast enough for some reason. ///they didn't truly die out they were reabsorbed into our genome after breaking away for sometime.
I’m watching with an open mind, but the science is clear at this point. The Neanderthals did not die out. They had sex they intermingled. Many of us carry their DNA today. My father-in-law was quite Neanderthal looking had 4% Neanderthal blood. They were fully human just like Homo sapiens. They did the wild thing had babies and their babies had babies and here we are.
The Neanderthals must've perished because they got dominated by homo sapiens to their extinctions, which happened to the mammoths, dodo and other extinct animals
Probably eaten or bred out of existence
My dna is mainly Dutch/German from below the Rhine and Flanders. I'm 3% Neanderthal and in my mothers line H5a, linked to the repopulation of Europe after the ice age. It would be great to learn to what Neanderthal(s) I'm related to.
They went extinct because they were tasty 😋
Nah sole survivor here 👋
As an official Representative of the estate of Thorin, et al, I would like to advise you that nether Thorin, his heirs nor assigns are “neandertals” and all of the treasure from the Dragon Smaug have been passed to the appropriate parties in accordance with his wishes.
You'll still here.
The Earth has periodic inactivation programs. Neanderthals and all other creatures on Earth died out simultaneously.
Good video
awesome documentary . i feel into deep sleep xD
Did they resolve the question of the mitochondrial DNA dating mis-match, which seemed to conclude he was much older? Like was that line of evidence simply abandoned in favor of isotope dating?
i imagine they were absorbed into the human population.
Hey, you guys got Inge Thiele to narrate the English in this documentary. That's cool. At least it SOUNDS like the same voice artist who did "Inge Thiele" in the Hitler's Reich series (which was amazing, btw). Keep up the great work. Gut gemacht!
They voted Socialist !
natural selection and if you have a close look at some races there's definitely some neanderthal traits
Nice presentation and nice discovery 🙂
They didn't die out . they are called Caucasians todays
i am nerd at it's too boring for me
Any books or papers have been published about this finding? Especially about possible sea voyage around 50,000 years ago.
I worked as an archaeologist a few years back, nothing fancy or anything, but I still remember the smells. You carried them home. You actually kinda smelled like a 5000 year old corpse when you arrived for dinner, not kidding it was a UNIQUE odor
We ate him
Thorin was not the last neanderthaler !!! i spend the first 12y of my life in THE Neandertal. I played were the Neanderthal Kids played. 🙂
My question is,when did Adam and Eve, come into play?
So why did they die out? 🤔 I must've missed that part of the video.
Carbon dating is pseudoscience adjacent. Ripe for abuse and perfect for confirming biases. 🙄
No sugar… No cavities. 🦷
21:33 The archelogist himself looks very Neanderthal to me!
We didn't get cavities because we had sugar a few times per year 🤭
fantastic!
Awesome
Why are they working an archaeological site barefoot? Odd…
They didn't die out. They were found in a Appalachian cave, extracted and cloned and released as MAGA.
