RIVIERA MAYA, Q. ROO – Despite the early and heavy arrival of sargassum along the coastlines of Quintana Roo, the state’s Ministry of Tourism (Sedetur) projects a robust influx of nearly 1.3 million tourists during the upcoming Easter holiday period, underlining the Mexican Caribbean’s enduring appeal among both domestic and international travelers.
Tourism Secretary Bernardo Cueto Riestra emphasized the optimistic outlook, with hotel occupancy expected to surpass 82 percent across the region.
“For Easter, we are expecting more than 1.2 million tourists,” Cueto Riestra stated. “This is especially significant for the domestic market, which continues to seek ways to reach our destinations despite complications stemming from limited flight availability.”
While sargassum continues to present environmental and operational challenges for coastal destinations, tourism demand remains strong. Officials are particularly encouraged by a notable increase in domestic travel, as well as sustained momentum from international markets.
“In March 2025 alone, over 700,000 U.S. travelers visited Quintana Roo, up from 400,000 just five years ago. This growth is a direct result of our focused promotional efforts across key travel segments,” Cueto Riestra added.
With 67 percent of visitors arriving from abroad, Sedetur is also working closely with foreign consulates to ensure the safety, protection, and satisfaction of international tourists during their stay.
“We are maintaining coordination with consulates to guarantee excellent service and a secure experience for our visitors. Many return because they consistently find a safe and welcoming destination,” said the tourism secretary.
From March 15 to 21, the Mexican Caribbean hosted over 500,000 tourists, recording an average hotel occupancy rate of 84.7 percent. Expectations are even higher for Semana Santa, which runs from April 13 to April 20, 2025, with a projected total of 1,290,000 visitors across the state.
Authorities continue to monitor the sargassum situation closely, while reinforcing beach cleaning efforts and offshore containment strategies to minimize the impact on tourism during one of the busiest travel weeks of the year
