During a press conference in Brampton, Ontario on Monday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that the government will be investing $134M in police helicopters to combat carjackings and auto thefts in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Ottawa. The decision comes as a response to the rising rates of car-related crimes in these regions, which have been a growing concern for both residents and law enforcement.
The new funding will be used to enhance police aerial surveillance capabilities, allowing for quicker response times and improved coordination in tracking down stolen vehicles. The helicopters will also be equipped with advanced technology to aid in the apprehension of suspects involved in carjackings and auto thefts.
Premier Ford emphasized the importance of taking action to address these crimes, stating that they not only threaten the safety of residents but also have a negative impact on the economy. He highlighted the need for a comprehensive strategy to combat car-related crimes and ensure the safety and security of communities in the GTA and Ottawa.
Local law enforcement officials have expressed their support for the government’s investment in police helicopters, citing the benefits of increased surveillance and faster response times in addressing carjackings and auto thefts. The funding will allow for a more proactive approach to tackling these crimes and hopefully lead to a decrease in their occurrence in the future.
Overall, the decision to allocate $134M towards police helicopters demonstrates the government’s commitment to addressing the issue of carjackings and auto thefts in the GTA and Ottawa. With enhanced surveillance capabilities and improved coordination among law enforcement agencies, residents can expect to see a more concerted effort in combating these crimes and ensuring the safety of their communities.

Don’t get me wrong we need to fight these carjackings. But these helicopters flying above my house in the middle of the night shaking it ain’t cool. Now you’re telling me there’s gonna be more?
Probably just result in an increase of helicopter thefts in Ontario
You still can’t catch Tarzan
Remember criminals u gotta drive close to pearson airport so they helicoters lay off you or drive to underground garages.
No bail for non citizens. Example, i was hit and so were about 8 cars and a ttc bus by a drunk driver. He was on a student visa from i believe Saudi Arabia … he returned home to never be seen again in canada. Justice system favours the criminals.
Good!
All for show and waste of money. Judges will continue to let them out.
Good Doug Ford God bless you ❤
How u catch a car thief with a helicopter 😂
How about shutting down the borders and getting tough on criminals?
Yes sir …
just let us arm our selves its cheaper and u dont have courts fees that come with it 🙂
While I applaud provincial conservatives trying to fight crime, it won’t do anything when the federal liberals give bail to criminals a day later.
Waste of money when they just get released on bail and then reoffend the same crime a day later? If criminals actually did the time for there crime then this would make more sense
I drive on the 401 everyday and see cars with dealer plates and obscured plates that can't be read headed to Montreal. Care to guess that some aren't headed to a container ship for overseas delivery? Who could stop them? The OPP. Only most stretches of the 401 are not patrolled except when accidents occur. Have I seen any helicopters? Nope. How do cars go from Toronto to Montreal? All that needs to be done is inspect the trucks, car carriers loaded with used cars, and stop anyone with suspicious license plates. Ford isn't doing anything serious to stop this fiasco, except to give the OPP a couple of new toys to play with. Ministry of Transportation should be doing inspections, and the OPP should be patrolling the 401. In Ontario, crime pays!
just a way to waste taxpayer money on something that doesnt help anything except handing out fines and tickets. Which them abuse commuters and not criminals
Ya that what we need helicopters…. Not Doctors, clinics, nurse practitioners…
Waste of money!
That's kind of a Trudeau move there. How about actually catching the criminals and keeping them behind bars with real sentences?
