18 killed in Israeli strike near hospital in Beirut

An Israeli air strike near Lebanon’s largest public hospital in southern Beirut has resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 18 individuals, including four children, according to the Lebanese health ministry.

The strike, which occurred in the Jnah neighborhood on Monday night, also left 58 people injured as three buildings located approximately 160 feet from Rafik Hariri University Hospital were destroyed. The attack caused significant damage to the hospital, one of at least 13 targets hit across the capital.

The Israeli military claimed to have targeted a “Hezbollah terrorist target” near the hospital, although specifics were not provided. They maintained that the hospital itself was not intentionally targeted or impacted by the strike. The military alleged that Hezbollah strategically places their assets within civilian populations, a claim which Hezbollah has denied in the past.

Prior to the strike, the military had issued warnings for people to vacate several locations in southern Beirut, but the area surrounding the hospital was not included in these warnings.

The aftermath of the strike has left a trail of devastation and loss in its wake, sparking outrage and calls for accountability from the international community. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of conflict on civilian populations caught in the crossfire.
