Germany Votes: 2025 German Election Live Results

On February 23, 2025, German voters will head to the polls to elect politicians to the Bundestag, the lower house of the German parliament. The party with the most representatives in the Bundestag will then attempt to build a governing coalition, with the leader of the winning party being appointed as the next chancellor.

Currently, the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), are leading in the polls. They are followed by the far-right populist Alternative for Germany (AfD), the governing Social Democratic Party (SPD) and Greens, and the neoliberal Free Democratic Party (FDP).

The German electoral system is designed to produce coalition governments, combining majority rule and proportional representation. Each voter casts two ballots – one for a direct candidate from their constituency and one for a political party. The second ballot determines the strength of the parties in the Bundestag, with any party winning over 5% of the total vote guaranteed a seat in parliament.

As the results of the 2025 German election unfold, it will be interesting to see which parties will form coalitions and ultimately lead the government. Stay tuned for more updates on DW News as the election progresses.
