7 Inmates Too Dangerous for Any Other Prison
Ninety miles south of Denver, along Colorado Highway sixty-seven, a group of low concrete buildings blends into the dusty foothills. From the road, you might never guess what they hold. There is no sign announcing “Supermax.” But look beyond the first fence, and there is another. Then come twelve gun towers, razor wire, sensors that detect movement, and guard dogs. Behind those defenses is the United States Penitentiary, Administrative Maximum Facility. It is better known as ADX Florence, or the Alcatraz of the Rockies. Opened in November nineteen ninety-four, it holds roughly four hundred men at a time. Some attacked guards or killed other prisoners. Others were considered too dangerous to have the freedoms available in ordinary prisons. Even a phone call could give them a way to hurt someone outside. So Florence controls almost every part of their day.
