Louisiana’s shrimp industry, which brings in about $1.3 billion annually, is facing a bleak future. Despite the state catching roughly 70 million tons of shrimp, it is not enough to keep up with the increasing demand in America. This has led to a reliance on cheap imports, which make up a staggering 90% of what the US consumes. Most of these imports come from countries like India, where controversial farming tactics are used.
The influx of cheap imported shrimp has resulted in a drastic drop in dock prices in Louisiana, forcing local shrimpers to lower prices in order to compete. As a result, US shrimpers are facing a challenging situation of rock-bottom prices and soaring fuel costs, making it difficult for them to stay afloat. Companies up and down the supply chain are deeply concerned that this may be the last generation of Louisiana shrimpers.
The issue at hand is further explored in the video, which delves into the process of making New Orleans shrimp po’ boys, how shrimp processors operate, and the challenges of running a shrimp boat. The video also sheds light on the problems associated with US shrimp imports, highlighting the struggle that domestic shrimpers are facing in the wake of the influx of cheap foreign shrimp.
As the future of Louisiana’s shrimp industry hangs in the balance, it is evident that urgent action is needed to support local shrimpers and preserve this integral part of the state’s economy. The potential extinction of the $1.3 billion industry serves as a stark reminder of the impact that global trade dynamics can have on local businesses and communities.

This boils down to the BIDEN WHITE HOUSE. Like everything else in the US economy it's ruined! VOTE THEM OUT!!
That is why it is bland taste like squid
Too much process
So, stop fishing for shrimps for fucks sake
STOP THE IMPORTS of unregulated farmed shrimp!! Where is the import regulations? There isn't any because Biden is in their back pocket!
How much did BPs Deepwater Horizon effect the Lousianna shrimp industry? All those chemicals they dumped onto the oil to make it sink to the ground so it couldn't been seen in the news anymore had to be extremely toxic…and the oil isn't gone, it's just not on the surface but on the ground, probably still there most of it that hasn't washed ashore since then.
Trump2024
I had never seen a shrimp sandwich!
I like that Po Boy shop owner. I feel like he's my type of people.

Go to nine minutes and 18 seconds and there is a dolphin in the back like this comment if you saw it
Yeah, my dad and uncles got out of the shrimp business in the mid 90s. They saw the signs and decided to leave before they began operating at a loss. Those were happier times. I do miss living off the coast and visiting the shore every weekend.
damn that dude is 82? holy moly i hope i look like that at his age!
Spoiling fresh delicious shrimp serving it in a bread. Oh, my ! Americans ahahahah
Time to sanction India's shrimps
"Bidenomics"
tariffs!!! hit imported shrimp with high tariffs!!!!
Long term solution for import. If you fine anti biotics or other illegal substances in import, You halt ALL of the import from that company until everything is tested. Your product will rot before it's all cleared up? Your bad for breaking the law and trying to import illegal and unsafe products. It will keep US citizen safe, And will most likely make the enviroment better because Farmers will not be able to use the medicine on shrimp.
idiot buys from mexico and says has never served foreign shrimp…
If imported shrimps are of poor quality then no one would be buying them, instead of complaining about Indians and chinese you guys should thinking how to make it more profitable.
5lb bags of 15 pieces?! Did you bother to learn anything about shrimp retailing before posting?
Would pay more for US caught shrimp than any import.
13:08 “I rebuild this building at least 8-9 times”….Yet you still don’t learn your lesson. 😂😂You think I be stupid to build a building more than 3 times after Mother Nature destroyed it. Nah am good, lets move.
In Australia Yamba king prawns are the best.
Don't understand how shrimp from China or India is cheaper than the shrimp in our back yard.
"If a restaurant can't answer" where their product is from and enough people "don't order it", most restaurants won't hesitate to start lying about it. Taking the word of a server or cook at face value is naïve.
Tariffs
As a citizen of the USA, I really want to save the "home" industries but, there is a losing battle when it comes to paying more for "similar" products. 99% of the country is price conscientious and if it comes down to buying 26 count shrimp for 8.99(foreign) per pound or 13.99 per pound(LA produced) the 99% is going to continue to pay less regardless of any long term consequences, such as chemical consumption from eating them.
We were buying that from Food city in Virginia and loved it of course now you can’t buy it from there anymore so sad that foreign shrimp you don’t know what you’re eating
I have not respect for the workers, as there are so many thing they do wrong, this is considered pay back time. In other words TOUGHT SHIT
That's too funny how he met his wife, who at the time was a fellow competitor at a sandwich competition, which he happened to win
I dont get it, if the local market wants local product and there is huge local producer, how do US still lose to cheap foreign product? Its like having unlimited water for your farm and still suffer drough
We should buy American the gulf shrimp is superior in every way
peeled shrimps are just pure evil jello piece of shits
lol, i can tell you one thing. if i don't tell him what is what that guy will never know where the shrimp is coming from
Rock bottom? Sure about that?
Only the New generation of American intellectual workers can save America once the Old inefficient corporations and business owners die out
Mad dredge vibes
so the shrimp is frozen in liquid nitrogen, then coated with…. corn flour….. then deep fried…… in vegetable oil…… then served…. with… bread……. yeah i'm not eating that. and you probably shouldn't either.
I ate shrimp as a kid but for some reason got a allergy to shellfish at 20. Still activates my hunger to smell it cooking. I miss shrimp.
Only 😊white meat ever to come out of Louisiana
It'll definitely become extinct. Capitalism and human stupidity ensure that. The question is just how soon.
Such a biased video supporting the funding group. The pricing edge is purely due to cheap labour. What stops US govt from providing subsidies to local farmers?
Domesticated prawns are less nutrition rich?
Stop eating chicken and Beef too. Such hypocrisy to move the business away. The govt can't even increase import taxes as local production is a fraction of the demand. 😂
