Analysis suggests Israel has extensive long-term goals for Lebanon.

A new wave of Israeli air strikes in Beirut has left the city’s southern suburb in a state of destruction, with explosions rocking the area into the early hours of Sunday morning. Israel’s military had issued warnings to residents of Dahiyeh to evacuate, as multiple strikes have caused extensive damage in recent days. The aftermath of the attacks could be seen as large plumes of smoke billowed into the sky, following an attack near Beirut airport.

Israeli media outlets have reported that over 110 missiles were fired from Lebanon into northern Israel since Friday morning, resulting in the deaths of at least 25 people according to the Lebanese health ministry. In retaliation, three individuals were injured in Deir al Assad in northern Israel after a series of rockets were launched from Lebanon.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reaffirmed his commitment to respond to Iran’s recent missile attack, which saw almost 200 missiles fired into Israel. While the majority of these missiles were successfully intercepted, some managed to hit two air bases and areas surrounding the Mossad headquarters in Tel Aviv.

Nabeel Khoury, a former US Diplomat and current Non-resident senior fellow at the Arab Center, suggests that Israel’s long-term objectives for Lebanon extend beyond simply pushing back Hezbollah. The ongoing tensions in the region have escalated into a complex web of conflict, with potential implications for the future stability of both nations.

As the situation continues to unfold, it remains uncertain how Israel’s actions will impact the already volatile relationship with Lebanon and the wider Middle East region.
