Biden urges Israel to stop firing at UN peacekeepers in Lebanon

US President Joe Biden has spoken out against Israel’s firing on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon, urging them to cease the attacks following two incidents within a 48-hour period. The peacekeeping force, UNIFIL, reported that explosions hit its headquarters in the village of Naqoura, Lebanon, injuring two personnel. Additionally, another strike on Thursday resulted in injuries to two soldiers. Israel’s military has defended its actions, stating they were responding to an immediate threat in close proximity.

Leaders of France, Italy, and Spain have condemned the incidents as serious violations of international law. Meanwhile, humanitarian groups are warning that the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah is deepening the crisis in Lebanon, pushing the country into further turmoil. As the violence escalates, governments are working to evacuate their citizens from the region. Despite Beirut airport remaining open, most international airlines have suspended flights due to safety concerns.

Amidst the chaos, stranded EU citizens were able to leave Lebanon on a Belgian military plane. DW’s Rosie Birchard provides insight into the situation from Beirut, while Maureen Philippon, Country director of the Norwegian Refugee Council in Lebanon, offers further perspective on the crisis. The escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah is not only exacerbating tensions in the region but also posing a threat to international peace and security.
