China conducts military exercises near Taiwan to warn against separatism

China staged military exercises in the waters and airspace surrounding Taiwan on Monday as a show of force and a warning to Taiwan’s separatist forces. Beijing, which considers Taiwan a part of its territory, deployed fighter jets, drones, warships, and coast guard vessels in its fourth large-scale war games around the island in just over two years.

The United States condemned China’s actions as “unwarranted” and warned that they risked escalating tensions in the region. The US called on Beijing to act with restraint in order to prevent further escalation of the situation.

FRANCE 24’s Sharon Gaffney spoke with Rana Mitter from Harvard Kennedy School to discuss the significance and timing of China’s military drills around Taiwan. The exercises come at a time of heightened tensions in the region, with Taiwan increasingly assertive in its bid for international recognition and independence.

The international community will be closely watching how China’s actions impact regional stability and relations between Beijing and Taipei. As China continues to flex its military muscle, the situation in the Taiwan Strait remains a flashpoint that could have far-reaching implications for peace and security in the region.
