Toronto’s food banks are facing an unprecedented demand as more and more individuals and families struggle to put food on the table. In a city known for its vibrant food scene and diverse culinary experiences, it is a sobering reality that so many residents are unable to afford basic necessities. The latest statistics reveal that food bank usage in Toronto has reached a record high, with 3.5 million individuals relying on these vital resources for assistance.
The rise in food bank usage is indicative of larger systemic issues at play, such as rising cost of living, stagnant wages, and insufficient social support systems. Despite efforts to address food insecurity through various initiatives, including government assistance programs and community outreach, the demand for food banks continues to outpace available resources.
The impact of widespread food insecurity goes beyond hunger; it also has long-term implications for individuals’ physical and mental well-being. Without access to nutritious meals, individuals are at greater risk for a range of health issues, including chronic diseases and mental health disorders. The inability to afford food also contributes to a cycle of poverty and economic inequality, further exacerbating the challenges faced by marginalized communities.
As food bank usage soars to record highs, it is clear that more needs to be done to address the root causes of food insecurity in Toronto. This includes advocating for policies that lift individuals out of poverty, creating greater access to affordable housing and healthcare, and investing in initiatives that support sustainable and inclusive economic growth. Only by addressing the underlying factors driving food insecurity can we hope to create a more equitable and just society for all residents of Toronto.

We know Trump team … mean while Trump team we know JT and we hate him 😅😂
1st world country problems
Thank you Global, finally this is good journalism
lets talk about carbon and min-wage hike that only raises everything up
How does the food bank know if these people do have money
And using free bank food
Analysis based on food bank usage is misleading. Even people with higher employment income, child benefits and many international students are excessively using food bank to save and invest to boost their wealth. I know one guy has a house worth $1.5 millions, get child benefits for 3 children and earn rental income from basement rooms amounting $1600 monthly, and working multiple jobs for cash going to various food bank every week. So, food bank has to verify the income of the recipient. Even few month back , I read in the news that one IT employee was fired by the company seeing him waiting on the food bank line in Mississauga. So, do not come to the conclusion that country's poverty level is going up.
No country "anywhere" can ever have a robust economy if it's leading corporations outsource EVERYTHING to increase profit margins and avoid unionization and collective bargaining from it's wrokers, and you will never EVER reverse that because those corporations and the Canadian government are lifetime butt-buddies…
I am curious just how many Canadians are standing behind these Unions shutting down our Country.
Too many Indian students here using the food bank
" Shameful Canadian government" 🇨🇦👎👎 leaving Canadian citizens to starve and homeless 😑👎
To many immigrants.
ODSP stop taking government disability raise dollar for dollar. My income has went down since the raise of living. Thanks Ford .
Welcome to world 🌎 war 3 .
Canada is a progressive mess.
All by design
Only the US 100% tariffs on BC can save the Toronto food Bank 😮😮
God bless Canada.
Food banks should check for Canadian citizenship before handing out food. If the claim is that CANADIANS are doing without then lets make sure its CANADIANS.
Tell Freeland that!
Blame the banks who are raising interest rates even though the Bank of Canada has dropped their overnight rate by 1.25% since June- pure GREED
As a grocery store worker, it sickens me to see how high the prices have gotten… Grocery bills that would have cost just $80 when I started now cost $180
the Toronto GTA covers a lot more than the City of Toronto and spreads as far east as Hamilton as far North as Caledon and Georgina and as far east as Clarington giving a total of 6.4 million residents across 150 km east to west…. now Ontario is governed by a Progressive Conservative and they are responsible for all provincial homelessness and the specifically focused the majority coming into to the provinces biggest City Toronto where rents are high making it especially difficult for many to afford both rent, utilities and food…. if 1 in 10 (10% of residents) are actually attending food banks across the region that would mean 640,000 people relying on food banks across this stretch going north it stretches for 80km to the north which based on a 3.4 million visits means they only have 5 visits to the food bank in a year… I think you need to re-look at your stats and figures cos from the looks of it you got your math wrong…. at the very least each client would need at least 1 visit per month making 12 visits minimum per year ….. between the refugees, the foreign students, and our own homeless it seems a bit of a stretch for everyone but if you are going to fault our federal government for aiding refugess you might care to remember that you are in Canada as likely a descendent of refugees so maybe don't take umbrage at the easiest scapegoat cos you're unthinking in your provision of stats skewed by bad analysis
Never had crap like this in Canada until the genius JT keeps bringing them here
Only people renting should be allowed not the one who own home.
60% Increase in seniors using the food bank. All because the Liberal govt has refused to increase our OAS/CPP up to par with inflation! No one can live on $1000.00-$1500.00 a month!! And NO, we did not need dental care!
The report reveals that more than half (56 percent) of students turning to food banks are international students, with 93 percent of them being new clients. These students, while expected to come to Canada with enough money to cover both their tuition and living expenses, are finding themselves unable to afford basic necessities, including food. The troubling fact that food banks—resources designed to help Canadian residents—are now being used by international students underscores a larger issue: many students arrive without enough financial preparation to live in an expensive country like Canada.
International students pay high tuition fees, but the cost of living, particularly in major urban centers, can often be far higher than anticipated. Without sufficient funds or access to adequate financial support, students may find themselves struggling to make ends meet. While it is true that it is not Canada's responsibility to subsidize international students' living costs, there is a growing need for better financial education and preparation before these students arrive. Many may underestimate the true costs of living in Canada, leading to the difficult situation where they are forced to turn to food banks for help.
Ultimately, the responsibility for ensuring financial stability lies with the students themselves and the institutions that admit them. Universities and colleges should take a more active role in ensuring that international students are fully aware of the financial realities they will face and provide guidance or resources to help them manage their expenses more effectively. It’s not that Canada should be financially responsible for international students; rather, there needs to be a shift in how these students are informed about the cost of living and the financial commitments required. If they are to be expected to manage their own finances, they must be adequately prepared for the reality of life in Canada, including the potential financial strain that can lead some to seek food bank assistance.
Rest in peace John from Langford, we love ya.
Oh for the Harper years! When I could still afford my rent, bills, and food!
Manchurian candidates
Thanks giving will be here soon.
TRUMP DONATED HIS SALARY AS PRESIDENT FOR 4 YEARS, TRUDEAU SHOULD DO THE SAME
Could it be that foreign investment companies are literally the ones forcing Canadians out of house and home? Perhaps the government should insist that rental companies MUST build "affordable housing" that is actually affordable. Taking into account that people do need to buy food and have enough to pay for utilities, etc.
The NDP-Liberal coalition should be held accountable for what has become of Canada. All of them should be prosecuted.

"WHY THEY DONT THINK MUCH of Canada" Oh buddyyy get ready to feel like the hot guy at prom being ignored lol because why would USA care about us here? Specially when ppl like Dougg are trying to get attention by lighting fires with Mexico.
Let's remember the kindness it took and the hard work it was from our amazing from Christia Freeland to get Canada BACK on the free trade.
Bro we are about to see Nazi America try it's hardest to take us back to the Golden Age of Fossil Fuels! A.K.A a modern "industrial" war like era.
I think we are forgetting here in Canada what we are about.
Is it Canada we care about, our citizens, our own cultural values and believes? Or are we trying to mimic and pose as a lesser United States of America and United Staes of Mexico?
Please I wish we could see how we just need to be original and our own brand will lift up again.
Remember when Canada was an ICON of the world please, we did that with out becoming anyone else, let's pick up the pace and lead instead of following.
Longshoremen making their contribution to inflation 🤪👍
Why do people keep voting for the 3 large parties. They never solved a thing. Vote for someone else.
I was told that the problem will never be solved by donating to the food banks , but we need a better education system like other countries have , that make it so everyone has access to education , not just privileged children , all children and if this was the case in Canada it might make the difference in peoples lives, relationships and even bring the crime rate down. The person who told me this , was the Manager of a Food Bank for many years. it might boost Morale and values in people if they were not constantly beat down by oppression or by circumstances they have been born into. People need to feel useful and worth investing in.
good new is happen in t o on in the 80 90 or 200 why dough ford brother resign
I think Trump won because the majority of Americans like the idea of being able to make lots of money without having to care about anyone else; whether it's those who are less fortunate or their official allies.
More going to food bank…. alsovalot more immigrants, and housing is up…. yeah im not surprised
can the Canadians kick out this damn liberal government!!! This is totally unacceptable, incompetent, high bonus craving officials are running the government !!!
