Hong Kong’s Coffin-Sized Apartments offers a glimpse into the challenging reality faced by many residents in one of the most densely populated cities in the world. These tiny living spaces, which are as small as 15 square feet and often referred to as “coffin homes,” highlight the extreme housing shortage and soaring property prices in the city.
This video takes viewers on a tour inside these cramped living quarters, showcasing the cramped conditions in which many Hong Kongers are forced to reside. From makeshift kitchens to beds crammed into tight corners, the lack of space is evident throughout.
Despite the deplorable living conditions, some residents make do with what they have, showcasing ingenious ways to maximize their limited space. The video also sheds light on the social and economic inequality that exists in Hong Kong, where the wealthy live in luxurious high-rise apartments while the less fortunate struggle to afford even the most basic of accommodations.
Ultimately, Inside Hong Kong’s Coffin-Sized Apartments serves as a stark reminder of the pressing housing crisis facing the city and raises important questions about social justice and urban planning.

fun fact: these homes in cantonese is called 劏房 and they go for around 5K HKD per month for rent (about 600 USD)
2:38 14K HKD?? that’s so cheap for that size! such a steal
Very simple – the Government doesn't tax the rich enough and the poor are getting taxed way too much.

C'est malheureux de voir que en 2024 il y a encore de la pauvreté il serait temps que les hommes politiques ouvrent les yeux. Nous. E sommes plus a l'époque du moyen-âge.

I live in Hong Kong and find it shameful that the government has done almost nothing in the past and are doing nothing in the future to help these people who have contributed so much to the development of Hong Kong.
My prayer for the poors, immortal Li Ti Guay help them please ! Thank DREW& MATEJ for your courage to film the misery of Hong Kong, only the Feng Shui help the Rich not the poor in this city! Please help SOCO
Ahh so the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. Hmm…. Where else have I heard that before? 🤔
Coco stole my heart
The sad thing about this too is the government initially were cracking down on these homes but as time goes by they realized it is not possible to do so. So now they come up with a plan and that’s to order all these rooms to be remodeled to at least have a window each and to make it a little bigger. But this also raise concerns as rent will sky rocket with the owners needing to spend money renovating.
I’ve lived In taiwan and I’ve stayed in pretty small housing all my life but just being in Macau and hk’s housing area makes me claustrophobic. If you’ve been, you will know what I’m talking about. It prob ain’t much diff than India 😂
"The rich are like crazy Asian rich. The poor are like under the poverty line" for a second there I though she was referring to the Philippines. lol.
جميل جدا 🙏🏻 أهنئك ياصديقي فعلًا بإنك أبدعت ❤
Thank god I'm in India
Drew, this is so enlightening. I didn't realise this happens in Hong Kong. I frequently visit Hong Kong as I live in Shenzhen. But wow! 🤯 Thanks for bringing us Coco and her story, she seems an excellent person. I'll look out for her when I next visit
Little John worked hard all his life and saved up all his money to buy a coffin home, but the room was tiny. He couldn't take it anymore so he decided to do some remodeling. First he put in a new bed frame using galvanized square steel, and fastened it to the wall with some screws borrowed from his aunt.
hopefully, we will not all finish like that bcs of too many human,, So sad for these ppl
i dont understand how ppl can accept these condition , and is no rebellion against governement
im curious to know, how it evoluate during years, to become at this point
thanks for the video.
Elle est très gentille Coco 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Someone need to help coco she is so nice and really friendly
Those small rooms cost a lot. Its expensive and not comfortable to live in. I feel bad that people in Hong Kong with minimum wage earner, elderly, retired workers have to endure this kind of living everyday.
This is governing at its worse. This has going for years and the officials have let it perpetuate. Not only is it a health hazard and fire hazard but the close quarters allows diseases to spread like wild fire. Remember SARS in 2003? The landlords should be taken to task for treating fellow humans like this. They should be fined and penalised for doing this. Shame on you HK, both the colonial masters and the present government. You talk about HK's rejuvenation as a business hub, sort out this blight on your image first
We are all here because coco, coco make me cry.
Thank you for documenting the serious housing problem in Hong Kong so more people will know the reality of this concrete jungle. Love and support from HK!❤🫶🏻
When talking about the "coffin-sized" homes in Hong Kong, it’s important to understand the local culture and infrastructure before making broad comparisons. While these tiny spaces might seem shocking by Western standards, many people in Hong Kong are used to it and might even be thankful just to have a place of their own in such a crowded and expensive city.
That said, the biggest worries are probably the hygiene issues from sharing bathrooms, the fire risks, and potential bed bug problems. But when you think about it, there are plenty of homeless people in big Western cities who would jump at the chance to have even a small space like this. It’s a reminder that housing challenges look different everywhere, but the need for better living options is universal.
@drewbinsky bring the guy and lady to a short holiday ….Taiwan or Thailand …. they will be superrr happy
Sorry but compere to USA UK and other western countries including Japan Korea the peoples literally live on street in cold and hot weather with lot of drugs but in Hong Kong situation much better.beside this there is no perfect place on world map.
Aww bless you! I know you trying to treat Coco to some groceries… but one thing you have to learn about H.K. people is that, it is a different level of skills to beat someone in paying the bills! None of my relatives and friends ever let me win at paying 😂
thanks for telling the other dark side of Hong Kong story.
make the world see.
the face of Hong Kong government.
These people are not living in tents like they are in the US and Canada and pooing on the streets. 2024 NS Canada you can share a rented bdrm with a stranger for $500.00 a mth.
But I don't see any homeless on the streets like we have in the US. There are too many people walking on the streets there.
I think the most shocking part of filming this story is the fact that these coffin home dwellers are spending $200-400 USD per month for rent.
It’s just a very sad situation for hundreds of thousands of local people in one of my favorite cities in the world 😌 The next time you go to Hong Kong and enjoy the 5-star amenities, don’t forget about these people!
