Angela Rayner faces tough questions about inheritance tax at PMQs

Today at Prime Minister’s Questions, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner found herself in the hot seat as she faced tough questions about inheritance tax from rural Labour MPs.

The farming community, in particular, has expressed growing discontent over the government’s plans to charge 20 per cent inheritance tax on farms worth more than £1 million. This has led to around 13,000 farmers taking to the streets of Whitehall on Tuesday, some even bringing their tractors along as a show of protest.

The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) has also been vocal about the impact of these proposed tax changes, with 1,800 members lobbying their MPs in Westminster to address their concerns.

Environment Secretary, Lisa Reeves, however, dismissed the protesters’ claims, stating that they were “wrong” in their opposition to the inheritance tax plans.

The situation remains tense as farmers have threatened to escalate their protests unless the chancellor agrees to meet with them for talks on the issue.

As Angela Rayner faced tough questioning on this topic during PMQs, it is clear that the debate around inheritance tax and its implications for the farming community continues to be a pressing issue within the political landscape.
