My Grandfather was 16 in April 1906 when the Earthquake & Fire devastated S.F. He was in Vacaville; ( 53 MILES away) at the time.
He told us that the Fires were so IMMENSE in S.F, that they lit up the night, to the point where he could easily read his Newspaper in the dark without ANY other introduced light source; ( except the FIRE in San Francisco)! 😳
the Taiwan mandatory military service used to be 3 years during marshall law era. My dad and uncles all hated it…

Today Dec 2024 market street is crumbling. Commercial Tenants on the street leaving b c of the surge, perhaps 4-5 yrs ago, in shoplifting, homeless, crime.
Years ago all cars were prohibited on market. Only bikes and muni and eg cop or fire cars. That was a nice change.
The street will come back to life. Too many decades of us having had a fine main atreet.
